The 13 Artifacts Facts (Version 2) · 10:45pm Dec 4th, 2020
WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
I felt that since we’re in the third volume of the Witchblade Trilogy, I thought it prudent to give some information on the 13 Artifacts. When I was coming up with Volumes 2 and 3, I did research into each of the Artifacts. And when I did…it was a little disappointed to find out that there wasn’t a whole lot of information regarding their capabilities, and what little there was did not make the Artifacts sound all that powerful with a few exceptions. So, to keep things coherent and interesting, I’m going to create a list here to show others what the canon powers of the Artifacts are, and what I added to make them a little cooler and a little more intimidating and Artifact worthy.
Additional facts will be added as we get further into the story.
Witchblade
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Creates living metal armor around its host.
- Creates multiple bladed weapons.
- Can summon fire and immune to fire.
- Can cut through spirits/ghosts.
- Can resurrect its hosts from the dead, provided they were not slain with a magical item, like an Artifact.
- Can heal its host and others.
- Can sense malicious intent.
- Can only be worn by females.
- The Witchblade, despite its name, is actually male.
Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
- Transforming into a “super form”/crimson form. This was adapted from the Witchblade anime.
- The Trinity Form was something I created for Vol. 2, the only time this came close to possible, was when Witchblade and The Darkness were inhabiting the same host, which also happened to be male.
Angelus
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Creates autonomous living servants that can continue to exist after the Angelus is purged from its host.
- Can create various weaponry, except for guns.
- Can take control of its host.
- Is strongest in the light of day but weakens in the shadows of the night.
- Can wield fire.
- Can only inhabit a female host, and the Angelus chooses its host.
- The Angelus can extend the life of its host indefinitely. Making it so that they don’t require food or water while bonded.
- Can resurrect its hosts from the dead, provided they were not slain with a magical item, like an Artifact.
Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
- The created beings of the Angelus are not called “Sentinels”, I needed a word that would distinguish them from angels, as they are the guard and servants of the Angelus, not God.
The Darkness
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Can create weapons made of shadows.
- Can resurrect its hosts from the dead, provided they were not slain with a magical item, like an Artifact.
- Can create demon-like creatures to do its bidding, however, unlike the Angelus, if the host of the Darkness is slain, then the creatures will disappear with it.
- Can create an armor that makes its wearer neigh invincible. Superman actually battled the Darkness Armor once, and nearly lost if it wasn’t for the night turning into day. The armor takes on an appearance based on the personality of its current host.
- The Darkness can extend the life of its host indefinitely. Making it so that they don’t require food or water while bonded.
- The Darkness gains strength from the shadows, and from devouring the hearts of its victims. But when exposed to powerful light, it will burn and retreat into its host.
- Can create tentacles that can whip around and slash through most objects with ease.
- The Darkness’ host must never engage in intercourse with a woman, if that happens, the Darkness will attach itself to the soul of the unborn male child, and the moment that happens the host will die the instant the mother is impregnated. This has led to previous hosts created constructs to satisfy those urges.
- The Darkness will remain dormant in the soul of the host until their twenty first birthday. Until then the host is plagued with nightmares and whispers courtesy of the Darkness.
- The Darklings are little goblin creatures from the same video game. They were funny little monsters, so I wanted to bring them in as well.
Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
- The Darkness Guns are weapons from the video game of the same name, but I brought them into the story because they were cool.
- Shadow teleportation was something I added, it felt right and something that I though the Darkness could do.
- The term “Servants” was something I called the stronger, more elaborate monsters created by the Darkness, I wanted something to distinguish between the Angelus’ creations and the Darkness’, whereas the Sentinels live serve and follow the Angelus, the Servants are created with the sole purpose of doing the Darkness’ bidding.
Spear of Destiny
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Its true power can only be brought out by a descendant of Jesus, aka the Magdalena.
- Can slay supernatural beings, whether they are good or evil.
Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
- The various forms that it transforms into are an homage to Fairy King Harlequin from “The Seven Deadly Sins” anime/manga. This is based on some info that says the Spear may not be the Artifact’s original form.
Ember Stone
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Can create and manipulate fire.
- Can create fire constructs.
- Can transform its wearer into a fiery being.
- Can transform its wearer into a dragon.
- Represents life.
Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
- Crystalized fire, I borrowed this from “Promare”.
- Breathing in fire to heal others. This I also borrowed from “Promare”. It’s not entirely made apparent in my research that the Ember Stone can heal its host or heal others, but given that it is stated it represents life, I don’t think this is entirely out of its capabilities.
- Controlling who the flames burn, also from “Promare”. Although, again, something I think is within the Ember Stone’s power.
Glacier Stone
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Can create ice constructs.
- Can transform its host into a Frost Giant.
- Represents death.
Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
- Controlling water and freezing blood. Something I think is within its abilities.
- Creating blizzards, but also something I think it can do.
The Wheel of Shadows
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Can manipulate the time of organic and inorganic matter, it can age them to the point of decay or regress age to the point that a person will return to being a baby or zygote, and an object back to its raw material.
- Transforms its wielder into a shadow form and can manipulate the shadows of its body and around it as a weapon.
- It cannot make the wielder go back or forward in time.
Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
The Heart Stone
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Allows the wearer to see auras.
- Allows the wearer to see the dead.
- Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
The Rapture
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Allows the wearer to enter Hell.
- Allows the wearer to bestow hope unto a damned soul to grant them entry into Heaven. However, it never specifies how this decision is made, whether it’s the wielder that makes the decision or if it’s the Rapture itself is unknown, as far as to me anyway.
Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
- The ability to render the wearer invisible while in Hell. I gave it this ability as it would seem bad if a demon suddenly found you wandering around Hell and you were still alive.
- The ability to survive in Hell. Much to the first point, there’s no way a living human could survive the realm of Hell unless they were a demigod or something else.
Pandora’s Box
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Can create chaos and destruction.
- Can compel people to kill each other.
Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
- The musical aspect was just thrown in there for the Siren’s.
Blood Sword
Canon Powers/Facts:
- Can cut down supernatural beings.
- Is possessed by a demon.
- Will compel its wielder to kill until its blood lust is satisfied.
Non-Canon Powers/Facts:
- Can use the blood of its host as a weapon. I was inspired by “Deadman Wonderland”
- The Japanese titled attacks were inspired due to the look of the Blood Sword, which looks like a katana.
- Regeneration. I thought that this power would be something it could possess given that I gave it the power to control the wielders own blood.
the darkness Darklings are from the comics too
5409993 Ah, I thought that they were just exclusive to the game. I will correct.
The second non-canon fact about the Blood Sword makes me think of the manga/anime of Kill La Kill.
