ScorchingFlames Review: Five Nights at Freddy's · 2:39am Dec 4th, 2020

Grades:
0: The worst game of the bunch.
1-3: Very bad game. Tiny good things.
4-6: Mediocre. Some good parts, some bad ones.
7-9: Very good. Some flaws, but not too annoying.
10: Best game ever!

So... taken from some very good friends of mine, instead of continuing my review of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, I'm going to review my most favorite video game franchise of all time.

This first video game review will be Five Nights at Freddy's. This game changed a lot. It's gained a large fanbase, and in spite of losing fans, it's also gained fans. Many sequels have been released, and are still going to come in the future. There are also some books, and a movie adaptation that starts filming in 2021.

This game also changed the life of it's creator, Scott Cawthon. Because before this game, all of his other games were lesser-known and had negative reception.

So, with that, let's get into it. Now, I haven't fully beaten this game, nor have I played it too much recently. But I know enough about this game to do a review so... it counts!

The whole premise of the game is simple: it's sit and survive. You are a security guard, who has been hired to watch over a Pizzeria for six hours: 12AM to 6AM. However, here's the catch: you have a bunch of animatronics that are coming to kill you. Your only defenses are doors and lights, but you have a limited supply of power. So you'll have to be wise with how you use them. You can also monitor the animatronics with cameras, but those take up power too. If you run out of power, you're dead.

There are 4 animatronics total: Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy.

They have simple mechanics, but they get harder to master each night. Bonnie and Chica roam the halls, and the lights will show you when they're at your doors (they can jam them, so be quick). Foxy and Freddy are the stinkers of the game, as you have to watch them to prevent them from moving. If you don't watch Foxy, he'll run to your door and kill you (if you shut the door, he will bang on it. The more he bangs on it, the more power you lose). For Freddy, when he's not watched, he'll laugh and move. He never leaves the room he's at, so if he's at the door (you can't see him. Not Foxy, either), you're screwed if you don't check on him often.

Honestly, although I haven't played this first installment as much as I have back then, it's still a good first installment. It also does another thing very well: Easter eggs!

Throughout the game, you will sometimes encounter things that relate to lore. One of the most frequent easter eggs are a few occurrences of the words It's Me. You may sometimes spot newspaper clippings pointing to the murders of a few children at the Pizzeria.

But this easter egg is the most rarest, the one I've devoted my time looking for every time I actually played the game, and the most discussable one of them all... Golden Freddy!

How you find it is if a certain poster changes to this guy's face. Golden Freddy will then spawn into your office, and many hallucinations will flash. If you don't put up your camera monitor, he kills you, and your game crashes. This character is very interesting and mysterious.

Now... what are the flaws, in the first game of the franchise? These mainly aren't from my view, but from others.

This has never happened to me, but for some people, this game would be boring. Although I haven't found it boring, I can understand why people think that. You are restricted to a room, and you can only press buttons to do things. However, the creepy atmosphere and the anxiety it gives you of jumpscares will make up for that. Again, the creepy atmosphere depends on the person, though even though I haven't played the game too much these days, I can tell I may get a bit of anxiety (though it may not just be for jumpscares. I hate to lose progress. I'm also basing this off the other games I played). You can tell if some of the jumpscares are coming if you're aware of the cues, but you can still get startled. Whether you get used to them or not is also up to the player.

One last flaw: it's a far cry from what it will become. Though the nostalgia also makes up for this flaw.

Final Verdict: This first installment kicked off a franchise, and it's flaws are countered by better things. For a first installment, this is nostalgia of 2014, and a game I'd recommend. Though to be honest, I may or may not play this game as much as others whether I beat it or don't, and it's probably not my top favorite, though it's super close.

So, not my #1 favorite, but still a 10/10.

(This is my second review. Hopefully I get better at this)

The very first "Five Nights at Freddy's" game. I remember a few years ago, when it was all everyone at school were talking about. Everyday at break time they would just gawk at their phones, hoping that they'd be able to survive at least one night without dying. Back when MattPat from Game Theory thought that this game was just a retelling of a real life murder case.

Before the "Purple Man". Before the complicated timelines.

The way I saw this game when I first played it was 100% different. I didn’t understand crap. I didn’t even understand the cameras, so I didn’t see anybody. I thought they’d move on camera, and when my sister mentioned some of the characters names, I pictured them as the type with sailor hats! Why?!? After the power-out jumpscare, I was scared of the game. And yet, it grew.

I missed that old “my-interpretation of the game”. That, and my interpretation when I’d stare at peoples computers when they’d look at FNaF images.

It gets crazier. Second review has been released. Feel free to look out for the future reviews if you're interested in where it goes. As I said, it gets bigger.

Wait, so the Santa hat is also a shame hat!? That changes EVERYTHING!!

The hat not only symbolizes Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Glow, but it also carries the shame of their past misdeeds!! Hence why it's also the shame hat!!
