This is Sunset’s origanal design from the first two films. Check the design on the boots. Now look at this.
Why do I get the feeling that Sunset was supposed to have a lot more character development that for some reason never really materialised. I mean, we all thought that Sunset would ascend to an alicorn after becoming Daydream Shimmer at the end of Friendship Games, but that never happened.
If that’s the case why the design on her boots?
Or.......it could be a case of her ego. She wanted to be like her princesses so much, she styled something so....minute to feel like her idols so much.

There’s a very good chance that Sunset’s boots are part of her outfit that she got after coming out of the mirror. It could have been a reflection of her desires or it could’ve been a representation of her potential. The unfortunate thing is that we will probably never know.
Though given how she willingly changed her outfit after Rainbow Rocks suggests she decided to take her life in a new direction instead of what may have been a possibility. After all, in the occasions when they happen, Sunset is reluctant to go back to Equestria suggesting that she doesn’t really see it as home anymore.
As I said, we’ll likely never know.
