The Queen looked around, then shook her head as she did her best to suppress her giggles the better to keep him amused.

"It must hurt. I was only meant to be a servant for a short amount of time, let alone a queen. They'd have to make up a huge portion of the kingdom for my entire time here, and I certainly would not be able to stay. I'm not even at your age yet, and you're still going to have some time left until you're done with this place. How long are you waiting for? I only have a few seconds of real time left."

"What?"

"So what do we have, Queen? I don't just want you here, I need my old friend. The Queen of Magic herself. She doesn't get much to say, not without getting in the way or making the problem worse. As a result, you'll need to accept some sort of a temporary assignment."

The Queen's eyes narrowed in concentration for a moment before settling on him again.

"There are several things about you I need to know the fastest or least painful way to get to them without making you feel even worse than that, but I am very certain you will understand them all without me telling you the whole story. Once you've agreed to whatever will be best for your needs, then you will be free to do or say whatever you want, whether it's in your home realm or away from the royal palace. I don't see any reason why you should have to go through all that when you've only just agreed to anything."

He nodded, allowing her to move on.

"A few questions though, I want to get this clear: If you won't be back before next time I've met you, then you have no need to accept a permanent assignment here. A spell can be cast and you're free to decide what you want to do next. You can stay with your team and the queen when you need to stay, or you can leave and explore any new lands we find. Or leave me alone and do your own thing for a few weeks until you decide. Or you might go to the outer lands and have a chance to settle down. Either way, you'll be free to explore any new lands you can find."

"There are two issues here, Queen. One is simply this. I don't want to take any risks on my old self, even if a temporary assignment would mean me going home to my family again, and I know that can still happen. I want to take risks; chances exist, in the end, to be the best, at what I can. Or a few of the best, to be the best my old self would have, at whatever time I can get the best. This isn't how you get to that place. What you do at that time depends entirely on what you get through, and I hope you can come here and see more than that. The second is, and I'm not completely sure, but I'm sure you've seen what I mean. Whatever you decide, you can never be satisfied either way. That I can't. The better you do at whatever is given, the better you'll become. The Queen may be a lot older, at least she has lived more than a hundred years on her. But there is no denying her determination; I will give her what I can when she needs me."

Her gaze drifted down, looking into the room, where a great many of his thoughts were. He was sitting on his throne, watching his thoughts and trying to see what he did not want the future to bring. He couldn't stand to look at his past mistakes, and they still haunted him. He couldn't go forward. He had to wait. He looked around the room. The room was so empty that there was no other way to go. He stared again, and a tear fell down his eye.

"I have to ask you something, a question I've never asked you before because I want you to see yourself in me and decide, not me tell you, ask me about it and see what you decide. I would choose to stay here with you for a few more months, until I'm ready to leave." He patted the Queen on the shoulder and lifted her leg up, taking advantage of the opening to slide it open and then his voice. "Don't go, Queen. What do you want to do? I can't change it, but I can be a better person to you. I can decide what I was able to then decide what I want to be, and decide that I want you to be the best King I can be, for better or for worse."

Queen nodded and moved to stand to his side.
