======== SAMPLE 1 ========

“You already knew I was a hero?”

“Yes,” I replied, before turning away again. “And why would I not? You and your immediate family have one of the most amazing hearts and minds of any human in history. Quills? Pottery? All of it, I just happen to know because I’m an alicorn. How could you not know?”

“I don’t say what even THOUGHT,” Princess Celestia said. “What I say is, where the logic lies, the time and place allow.” She turned in the other direction and pressed against the wall, leaning against it. “Are you not proud?”

I nodded. “I am.”

“And what does this newest incarnation of the Crystal Heart do to you?” Princess Celestia asked, her voice a warm, comforting expression. “You were never afraid of what fate might hold, nor so much of a chance as some others. You vowed not to let it happen to others. That you did could not stop them, but in doing so, you gave up a chance you could not find in yourself.”

“Why?”

“When you seemed prepared to accept the fate that awaited you, you just did not realize that it would be so.”

“Oh.” A sympathetic sigh escaped me. “I don’t have to do to you what you have done to yourself, and there is nothing I can do about it. It’s not fair that you could not find any other way to accomplish your goals, but I’ve learned the biggest part of the magic you've learned! I’ll be your shield, your shield, and my darkest fears will never be found!”

Celestia sighed. “I am not so different from you from where you came from, Sunset. Have you ever read? You’re kind of trying to talk to me and I’m not listening. What are you going to tell me?”

“I am going to not tell you anything,” I said, cutting her off with a single syllable. “Not until I can trust you, not until I’m certain it is safe to do so, and not until I’ve told you I can trust you.”

“What then, Sunset?” Princess Celestia asked. “Why can’t you tell me what’s going on?”

“Then, why can not you tell me what’s been going on?” I said. “I don’t know the words to our reunion, yet I can promise that I’ll not tell you what has happened without completely trusting you.”

“I have to promise that I won’t,” she answered. “Surely, if you were to try and communicate with me from Twilight’s perspective, you’d find that I’d run the risk of being avoidable and of even more so of not trusting me.”

So far as I could tell, neither of us knew what she meant by ‘exactly’ — much less ‘already!’ Perhaps it wouldn’t be a problem if I could just be a bit more sneaky about getting over ourselves.

“I’m going to be wary of how I’m actually communicating with myself,” I said, “because I’m in such a different place from in my last life. It’s just me being a changeling and leaking detail about myself down to take almost half the blame for everything that’s going on.”

“If you’re still going to be Silent Sky,” Princess Celestia said to me, her voice accompanied by a concerned frown. “I’m going to have to be careful about this.”

Though I knew it wasn’t a suitable solution, I should have kept quiet if I could just avoid letting myself go silent. “Princess Celestia…” I said to her, “Do not be so presumptuous about this.”

“What?”

“You’re asking me to lie to you.”

“No.” Her tone slowly softened. “You haven’t told me anything about what you’re doing to your mother.”

“I am not lying to you, Sunset.”

“That”
