Well here's the thing about fanfiction: you can make the rules. Want to pretend a mechanic doesn't exist? Then in your story it doesn't. Like an older set of rules? Then use those instead of the current ones.
Also Master Rule 5 is coming out in a few weeks which changes things for the better.
Honestly I'd temper usimg link monsters to specific people, sunset does need to have at least 1 maybe 2 for her pendulum summons. So maybe try to balance it?
I know how much you despise Link Monsters. I would personally use them sparingly, but it's your story, and you decide how to run it.

Well I was planning on giving her a new deck and had this whole back-up plan forming in the confines of my brain involving certain monsters and themes, and the poll is currently 80 - 20 in favor of no Links.
