How will this end?

I've been following some of the chatter about the most recent season, mainly because I've been reluctant to watch it. It seems odd when you look back at it, to create the School of Friendship, and introduce us to the Young Six, and then push them to the sidelines because their headmare is about to become ruler of Equestria. And are we really to believe that our heroes will still be able to live their lives, continue to teach, and also rule Equestria in some capacity alongside Twilight? It was hard for me to buy into in season 8, since you never got the sense of anypony having to make compromises or give up anything, and it seems a lot harder now. But the hints are that it may be where the show is going. And all this while Celestia and Luna do what exactly?
I know that the show has to end eventually, but I'm having a hard time getting into the way it's being done. Maybe some progress towards this ending should have been worked into season 8 instead of cramming it all into season 9. Or maybe, it's my issue and I just need to suck it up, and accept that all good things must come to an end. Or, just maybe, it's both.
