Today's the first time I've EVER skipped an MLP episode · 7:13pm May 11th, 2019

It's so strange of me to read that blog title back, seeing how I never skip an episode of MLP in case I miss out on a good lesson or comedy. Yes, even Starlight Glimmer episodes (tempted as I've been).

But the moment I read the premise for She's All Yak:

I'd never been more disinterested.

Not only am I just not invested in any of the Student Six (no, I don't hate any of them, there's just a lot of wasted potential with them and as such, they're just not that interesting) but this story has been done to death. I've seen it done so many times in other shows and movies before, it's ridiculous. It's always the exact same story with the exact same "be yourself" message.

In fact, it's such a tedious and by-the-numbers story with such an obvious moral, I bet I can predict what happens in the episode without even watching it:

"There's a dance coming up, Sandbar asks her out, Yona realises her yak ways are too rough and wants to ponify herself to impress him, she asks Rarity and co for a makeover despite their objections (or she uncharacteristically goes along with it), they even teach her to dance smoothly since she doesn't know how, she goes to the dance all dolled up and Sandbar's shocked/disappointed that Yona's not acting like herself, something goes wrong that ruins the dance for everyone and humiliates Yona, she feels bad (maybe even runs out crying), Sandbar goes to comfort her and tells Yona that he likes her for who she is and to "just be yourself", they both go back inside happily"

Alright, maybe I'm being too harsh. I'll most likely watch it later in future so I can rank Season 9 fairly, just in case it does something different.

This one annoyed me for one majn reason; Sandcellus, or rather riding roughshod over it.

This review sums up my thoughts on the episode quite nicely.

If you don't want to sit through an 8 minute long video, basically, I like the episode because of the cuteness of the characters (especially Yona), and I think that a lot of the interactions were done really well. Sure, the episode was predictable as hell, but it's about the journey, not the destination.
