Am i the only who's alright with Sombra's voice? · 10:43pm Apr 7th, 2019
And his presentation in the season opener?
Because as far as i'm concerned, what we saw is EXACTLY who he is.
Yes, based on his actions in the Crystal Empire by covering all of his bases, he showed he has a cunning, and intelligent mind. But aside from that, what else did we really know about him? The comics are non-canon so they aren't any basis for referential material. The only hint of his character we ever got was his debut, and "The Cutie Re-Mark", and yet we still never saw his real persona. And don't say we actually did, because we didn't - not really. Only small snippets of a persona. In his debut, King Sombra was in a shadowy demon state where he seemed to be bordering between the realms of the living, and the dead. Undoubtedly, reduced to a more primal version of himself, only intent on entering the empire, with his speech more or less limited due to his unearthly state.
You could argue he was still in that limbo even when the Crystal heart seemed to give him his body back. I imagine it was only like a very slow reversion back to his true self, and he was still a living shadow trying to get physical again. Perhaps that is why the heart destroyed his body when it was used: his "resurrection" was incomplete, and thus his form was unstable. And possibly so was his mind, as well, even he still retained a form of sentience.
So when Grogar used his own magic to revive him, it was complete, and official. Sombra was a creature of flesh, and blood again, as well as a masterful wielder of Shadow Magic. That could be why the heart didn't destroy him a second time, and why the Elements didn't seem to truly vanquish him.
Or perhaps the Sombra we actually saw wasn't really him, but a copy he made as a means of tricking the Mane Six.
Alot of people don't seem to consider the possibility that King Sombra, despite his obvious sense of arrogance (which everyone ALWAYS depicts him as anyway, so I see no issue with that), he was counting on the girls arriving to use the Elements of Harmony to thwart him. So he was either A) using a copy of himself to lay siege to the empire, or b) he pulled off a Naruto, and substituted himself with a shadow clone. Either way, he used it to his advantage, and waited to find out where they kept the elements. His luck hit the mother load when he was lead to the TREE of harmony, of which the elements were a part of. The rest is obvious history.
Also, I would recommend that nobody complains about how "easy" it was for Sombra to shatter the tree, and the gems and in doing so was completely out of whatever the term for out of character is for the scenario. NOWHERE was it ever indicated that the tree was invincible, nor were the elements. The first time the jewels were shattered they were in a dormant state, and had not fully bonded with their wielders, until Twilight and the girls realized their connections, and in turn gained the elements themselves. So what happens when the six of them are shattered again? Along with the very tree which grew them, which they were connected to? I think some might be seeing where i'm heading with this. Also, given how sudden King Sombra's attack was, there was absolutely no time for any of them to defend the tree, or the tree defend itself. Sombra obviously doesn't play like that, and that's part of why we love him.
Also, for those who might complain about how Sombra didn't really seem to need to fight to get everything he wanted, let me ask something: everyone remembers how close he came to conquering the empire when he and it returned, right? Mainly thanks to him using his own severed horn as a conduit for corrupting the empire, while he forced Cadence to expend her energies trying repel him as he quite possibly pressed his own form into the shield to speed up the process. Maybe that isn't really a basis for comparison, but he was only a living shadow back then, and he was able to corrupt the empire so. This time, he was fully resurrected in his prime, physical form. Which means his power was at its fullest. And I stand by the theory that the alicorns used the Elements to turn him to shadow last time, and banish him. And since that was only a very brief flashback which simply used small representation, there is NO PROOF that Sombra went down that easily. We only saw the aftermath of their conflict, and only barely.
Meaning while he isn't as powerful as Discord, for obvious reasons sadly, he is STILL probably mighty enough to rival the Princesses in terms of Magical Strength. After all, he is a creature of pure darkness, with powers beyond the norm for Equestria. Not to mention the fact he's good with mind magic, and the princesses left Canterlot undefended, AND that the Royal Guard has never been competent at anything they do. So tell me, what reason did Sombra have NOT to be all gloaty and boastful over his accomplishments? Especially after neutralizing the elements of harmony, and equestria's greatest defense? Much of the victory against him was luck-based, as almost noone except the audience knew what was going to happen.
So King Sombra's REAL VOICE isn't that big a deal, and i've gotten used to it. I just feel like people are just so used to the only piece of Sombra action we've had that goes back to The Crystal Empire. Not to mention the comic books, which give Sombra his own Alternate Universe history, and character. They are two different kings of two different series. True, tv Sombra's voice was unexpected, but it isn't completely disarming. I just think folks should learn not to take things too seriously, and just enjoy the moment as it arrives. If anything, this just amplified my appreciation, and love for the Shadow King, and I hope we get to see him again in the future before the season is over.
At least when Grogar finally decides to try, and bring him back again when he realizes he needs more muscle for his insidious Legion of Doom.
