SPIDER-MAN AND MJ ARE BACK TOGETHER IN CANNON · 7:22pm Jul 11th, 2018

It's enough to help me be okay with the fact that both Spider-Man and Peter Parker got their loser status back for no good reason.

Really hope that's going somewhere. Even before Spencer went nuts on twitter he had this weird habit of kicking every character he wrote when they were down.

Thank goodness. I once read through a collection of books regarding the original wedding, and I'm glad to know they're working towards undoing the retcon they did.

Which other major characters did he write? Did he do Deadpool?

They were such a great couple.

Dunno. He did this mini about a bunch of c-list Spidey bad guys pulling a heist, which is probably what go him the job, and there his style of hard luck characters constantly getting the shit beaten out of them all the time worked.

But he kept it up on his more mainstream stuff like Antman and the Cap books of the time, which is a lot like those Spidey books that insist the appeal of the character is that he's a complete fuck up and you're supposed to care.

The thing that's going (deservedly) define his career forever though is that he was the guy who came up with Hydra Cap. Which was always going to be an uncomfortable choice whatever his actual reasons for doing it, but got worse as time went on and Marvel began actually committing to the idea. Except also making excuses to lessen any kind of impact.

Which is where Spender's behavior on twitter comes in. He went from "wait 'n see!" to deensive to outright blaming anyone and everything. Then it turned out he'd had a career in politics in...think Cincinnati? Too tired to look it up. But he's one of those centre left liberals who agree with the right to alarming degrees.

And yeah, Hydra Cap was terrible but what gets overlooked by fans who don't have skin in that fight (and I'm talking about this because reading blogs by POC and LGBT commentators was what made me understand this) is how almost sociopathic his Sam Cap run is. It's this endless cycle of Sam trying and failing to change the social structure, except in addition to just failing at the job constantly because tragedy™ he also makes points against any left leaning argument against this shit. To the point that one story outright has him apologise to a Milo analogue. The guy Marvel put on Cap for social commentary...does not understand a lot of it, picks the most ineffective side in most of the debates and was terrible on twitter about it. To the point that in the middle of a rant he blamed fandom for Hydra Cap happening because it never accepted Falcon in the role. Which contradicts a looooot of the reasons he'd already given for the decision, which already contradicted each other.

So yeah. Spencer's a decent aesthetic choice, but there's a ton of shit built into how he works and how he behaves. Up to refusing to take responsibility for himself, which, y'know. Yikes.

Point being, even without all that shit which should not be ignored , Spencer tends to default to yanking the rug out from under his characters even if it technically isn't a good idea, and I'm really hoping he's not getting Pete and MJ back together just to break them up all over again.

Out of curiosity, how are they getting around the whole deal with Mephisto?

No idea. Those two pages? The last two in the book. Do you want a link to the issue?

I missed pretty much everything surrounding Hydra!Cap on social media. Was it really that bad? I was fine with it because I thought it sent a message that even the best of men could do awful things and that Real!Cap punching him in the face would be the most satisfying moment in forever. I feel like it did those two things; was the other stuff that bad?

Eh, not really. Thanks for the offer though.
