me vs. anon vs. anon about: Background Pony!

    (tl;dr, scroll to the bottom!)
So I'm on a certain well-lived thread on a certain imageboard, and find myself typing thoughtfully. Then I catch myself. Am I truly anonymous if I post this? No, I'm part of the demographic of "people who praise SS&E shamelessly".

    Avatars are important!

I've noticed something about user avatars. Here, and on forum websites elsewhere. Specifically with really cool, spicy avatars that make me laugh, or sigh and say: "nice."

It's this: I get jealous. And I want it.

Was it their intention to make me jealous by having an avatar that completely complements every post they make on the site? I dunno.

    [generic adult romance fantasy]

I'm currently writing down the two generic adult fantasies that I had as a high school student! I'm 23 years old, so this is more of an artistic experiment for me than anything else.
It's going well, I think; I already have 40 lines. (I tend to be the most productive writing in a plaintext editor, though, so there's no easy word count!)

Yes, in my mind, we SS&E fanboys are absolutely a statistically relevant population, and can be subject to socio-economic study. :trollestia:

However, in spite of my tendency towards paranoid introversion, my message must be known! I'm posting it here.
First, what the channers were saying:

That story was depressing as fuck. Pretty well written.

That story is overdramatized overrated garbage, you must be edgy teenager to actually like this.

And here's what I wrote in the Reply box, before realizing what I was doing - taking the bait, professing my own well-articulated opinion about a subject anonymously to a group of people who might not even know what I'm talking about.

It is more like just pure edge, but in an overall way, like how Dark Souls is. A non-edgy non-teenager would justify the story by pointing out, BGP paints a beautiful character portrait of the protagonist, and it has an interesting mood of inevitable-yet-contested tragedy that compels the reader to read for whatever bittersweet ending might be coming at the end. And it's edgy because of the magical universe and the storyline, not because of any low quality characters or situations.

Some people might see why I didn't want to post my opinion there and then. I mean, clearly this is too verbose for the thread in question - which exists mostly for posting cute pictures and for discussing mlp:fim. Plus, what I'd written counts as a review. Reviews should be credited to a reviewer, right?

To further elaborate on this feel: on that anonymous style of site, long-winded discussion/arguments are just for show. You're just throwing away your words-per-minute there, when you write a lot. And to look back at it after posting, what you're seeing isn't always what you wanted. After all, when you look back at it, it's just Anon Vs. Anon. Is Anon a whole legion, a team of people co-ordinated with highly advanced equipment respectively? Is Anon a rowdy crew of misfits grouped around to take turns at a single keyboard? Could Anon be just ONE person in total, having a pretend fight, practicing their sock puppetry?

I didn't want to put my review into a confusing system. Posting there would attribute the opinion to nobody except certain dwellers of that thread. The fictional works of SS&E are worth more than that, IMO. And evidently others agree - hardcover physical copy, indeed. The pic of that hardcover, that showed up earlier in the thread, had me feeling quite jelly.

tl;dr section: a quick review and recommendation for Background Pony by Shortskirtsandexplosions
Edginess rating: all-encompassing and inescapable. It will drag you in. (see also: Dark Souls.)
BGP paints a beautiful character portrait for Lyra, the protagonist.
It has an interesting mood of inevitable-yet-contested tragedy.
I think it's readable by an audience further than those who are lovers of edge and tragedy. The reader is compelled to read for whatever bittersweet ending might be coming at the end; this is owed by both epic drama and fantastic imagery.
I don't think epic character drama nor fantastic imagery should count as "overrated".
I find BPG plays its hand of cliché cards smoothly, with good rhythm.
