me vs. anon vs. anon about: Background Pony!

    (tl;dr, scroll to the bottom!)
So I'm on a certain well-lived thread on a certain imageboard, and find myself typing thoughtfully. Then I catch myself. Am I truly anonymous if I post this? No, I'm part of the demographic of "people who praise SS&E shamelessly".

    Avatars are important!

I've noticed something about user avatars. Here, and on forum websites elsewhere. Specifically with really cool, spicy avatars that make me laugh, or sigh and say: "nice."

It's this: I get jealous. And I want it.

Was it their intention to make me jealous by having an avatar that completely complements every post they make on the site? I dunno.

    [generic adult romance fantasy]

I'm currently writing down the two generic adult fantasies that I had as a high school student! I'm 23 years old, so this is more of an artistic experiment for me than anything else.
It's going well, I think; I already have 40 lines. (I tend to be the most productive writing in a plaintext editor, though, so there's no easy word count!)

I dunno.
Maybe people don't intend anything with their avatar at all; only that it was fun to upload at the time. But I rarely ever think of it like that.

One day, I was thinking about how much I like ethics in general. "Ethics!" I said. "I can apply Ethics to forum avatars!"

Ethical avatar rule #1: if you are in love with an avatar (for some reason, I dunno... it could happen... :scootangel:), you should probably send a message.
Sending a message about avatars is okay. And it has to be about the avatar.
Make it short, and maybe offer only a single compliment: "Dude, your avatar makes me laugh every time!" or, "Hi man, I really love your avatar. You have good taste."
I don't think, on the other hand, it would be proper to offer your complex feelings about an avatar.
Stuff like this,
"Well I just wanted to say, I was really getting into it today, but whenever I see you post something I really get into it. Especially with how your avatar is so :twilightblush: and always makes me :yay:."... would probably be what you'd describe as creepy.
Like, that would make it weird. I'd probably change my avatar, receiving something like that. I mean, you can let people know in certain ways, but just don't make it weird, dude.

Ethical avatar rule #2: Maybe this would be making it weird, a little.
But, if I were to get a compliment on my avatar, and I know the person is jealous, there should be an acceptable amount of fun we can have with that.
And in fact I might feel responsible to indulge whoever sent me the message. So, I would send that person my avatar. And say "you should try it on, bro."
And then, we can message each other; it'd be like two clones -of one awesome thing- talking to each other about stuff. Or then, we can pop up in a random forum thread and take it over by just replying to each other. Rude, maybe, but also funny or at least satisfying.

I actually don't post in forums that often, though.

Anyway, that's my standpoint on the ethics of forum avatars.
Why ethics? Why analyze it in terms of that?
Well, because things that are important should remain important, and I think that's an important definition in thinking about Ethical thinking.

(By the way, any authors I'm following: I'd apologize about bookshelves, but... I don't think I'm doing anything wrong as of yet?)
