Okay. So. In light of recent events, I want to say something.
I fucking love this fandom.
It's not perfect. No fandom is. I've been in fandoms as an observer since 1998 and all have bad eggs. But this fandom is the most creative, most welcoming, funniest I've ever been in. It literally changed my life. It healed me when I was in the worst mental shape I have ever been in. It gave me a reason to smile again. It gave me the best friends I've ever had. It gave me the courage to leave the house again for something other than work. Being in it is the best thing that ever happened to me. Because of this fandom I have changed from a nervous wreck of a social recluse who didn't even have the courage to speak to shop clerks to someone who speaks at conventions - hell, who ATTENDS conventions - who can travel and who has more confidence than she has ever had before. Ponies stopped being about just the show for me a while back. It became about the people. It became about the memories and the life experiences I never thought I'd have. It became about learning new skills bettering myself, learning about points if view totally antithetical to my own and realising that while I'm a tiny part of the universe I *matter*.
I. Fucking. Love. This Fandom! And however bad some people can be, I will fight like fuck for it. Though things seem dark with each drama that comes along, and I respect that some people have reached their limit for the bullshit that goes on, I still love it here. I will not deny that there are issues I wish didn't exist. I will not deny that I too have no stomach for some of the stuff that has come to light recently.
But you know what? Fuck the cockroaches running for cover. They are the exception, not the norm. I will stamp them out because to me? This fandom is still a great place full of great people and I aim to keep it that way.
