I Read IDW Sonic #1 · 5:19pm Mar 24th, 2018
It was released early for those who attended Wondercon. Someone uploaded it to Reddit, and me being me, I couldn’t resist reading it.
Still gonna buy it day one. It’s a solid, pretty safe start. Spoilers below for anyone curious.
I’m putting everything in spoiler bars since it isn’t out in stores. If anyone’s curious about what the book will offer, read on.
The first page is a four panel montage of Sonic fighting the Egg Viper from SA1, the Egg Emperor from Heroes, the Egg Dragoon from Unleashed and the Mega Death Egg Robot from Forces. There’s a narration box about how Sonic and Eggman have been fighting, and after their last battle (Forces), Eggman vanished but his robots didn’t.
The book cuts to Sonic running towards a town under attack by robots. He meets with the city’s militia, who are all animal people with Wispons (A nice detail) and helps them fight off the Badniks. He shows off for a bit and tells everyone to get to safety, the people in awe.
However, he runs into a giant Egg Hammer from Heroes. He doesn’t care and takes it on. What catches him off guard is that there’s 4 of them. Equal sized and just as strong. Sonic’s overwhelmed and is about to get crushed, but...
He’s saved in the nick of time by Tails! Sonic’s two-tailed friend isn’t hiding in the background or constantly crying for help this time. He’s here and he’s ready to help fight.
And so, Sonic and Tails start their team-up with a double Spin-Dash combo and easily destroy the Super Badniks wrecking the town. The last Egg Hammer and other robots tries to retreat, but Tails closes the gate, allowing the two of them to finish the job. The two take a moment to boast Tails’ dramatic save.
With the battle done, Tails points out how this was more coordinated than usual, saying that after their war against Eggman, the attacks from whatever remained of Eggman’s forces seemed more accidental than planned. Sonic agrees and wonders if it was Eggman. Tails says that this is lacking his usual fanfare.
Sonic brags that he’ll take down whoever’s behind this anyway. Tails expresses his concerns that Sonic should be more careful since he doesn’t want him to get caught off guard again (a reference to his defeat by Infinite in Forces). Sonic sees his friend’s concern and promises him that’ll be careful.
Tails gets invited to travel the world with his friend, but after seeing the damaged town and doing some thinking, he decides to stay back and help them rebuild. Sonic says that they’ll bash bots some other time, Tails happily taking the offer.
As Sonic runs into the next town, it’s revealed that a surveillance drone was watching the whole thing and a mysterious voice (most likely Eggman) expresses his desire to destroy the Resistance and launches an attack on the nearest town. The target: Amy Rose.
So yeah, it’s a pretty good, if safe, start. And it’s only gonna get better from here.
It was good start. Glad to see Tails kick ass.
4824070 Ian Flynn knows the characters more than Sonic Team. Tails kicking ass gave me more faith in this book than usual.
