Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie Review · 11:58pm Jan 23rd, 2018
A movie... about watching a movie. I like it!
Okay, quick overview. Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a comedy series about a guy who is trapped in space with two robot companions forced to watch the worst movies put together as experiments to see what is the perfect movie for driving those insane. The show starred Joel Hodgeson for a while, but then it went to Michael J Nelson, the show's writer, along with his companions Crow T. Robot, Tom Servo, and Gypsy.
Red guy is Joel, blue is Mike.
Anyways, this show quickly gained popularity simply from its simple premise; making fun of movies. People came to this show for the hilarious commentary they provided, and they made some of the most hilarious jokes ever devised.
Not only that, the show has a fantastic theme song which explains EVERYTHING on what the show's about.
Which leads us to their movie that actually got released in theater, under the title, Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Movie. Ain't that a mouthful.
Is it a good film worthy of watching lots of times, or should it be panned and left forgotten. Well everyone, prepare yourself for the review of Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie!
*pulls lever*
So the movie is pretty much a spot-on representation of the show, and its done pretty well. The movie, not the movie they watch, just the entire movie in general, centers around Mike and his Bots as usual, but Dr. Forrestor, the mad scientist who's held them captive in space, has picked out the perfect movie he believes will drive them to the breaking point, allowing him to take over the world.
And so, the boys/bots have to sit through the 1955 classic, This Island Earth.
First thing I want to point out is, as a representation from a TV show, its perfect. It follows the formula of the show really well, cause it STAYED WITH ITS ROOTS. That's what all TV to movie adaptations should be, staying to what makes it good, not the exact opposite!
Also, set design is really good. Inside of the Satellite Of Love (the ship that the crew resides in) is a lot bigger and has some more updates to them. We're not sitting in the main bridge, we're walking around and getting to look at their ship some more. Its kind of cool. Ship looks rather nice actually.
Acting from Mike and the Bots, and even the side characters like Gypsy and Dr Forrester stay top notch and match the tones of the show's counterparts. Not Oscar-worthy mind you, but still pretty decent.
But the main attraction is the humor for the movie. Now I'm gonna say it... its hilarious. Their riffing on This Island Earth is hilarious. They throw a lot of lines in there that made me laugh almost every time. There are a few in there that may not hit the mark, but they kept it consistently funny which is all that matters.
And... that's all I got. Honestly, there's not a lot to talk about in this movie. 90% is watching another movie with the guys, which is still enjoyable. Its just more of another episode with a higher budget. But... does it mean the movie is bad? No. No its not. Is it perfect? No.
Look, honestly I have no criticisms with the movie. I can't think of any. But it doesn't make it a perfect movie. Since most of this film is us watching a movie within a movie, but with hilarious commentary, there's not really much to say. But it is still a funny movie that I think is worth checking out. Specifically for the movie viewing moments. I guarantee you'll get some kicks out of this film.
I give this movie, a 7 out of 10. Its a good movie. Not perfect, but its good. But it is a great adaptation from the TV series.
Thanks for reading, and have a great evening guys!
You post film reviews sometime? Cool. One of my first-ever blog posts on this site was my review of The Last Jedi. I might try and do more film reviews sometime, if anyone is interested XD
This was a nice little piece, btw. I've never seen much of MST3000, but I do know about This Island Earth, and sometimes riffing on a movie can be funny. (Sometimes XD Depends on who exactly is doing the riffing, or what's being riffed.)
No way! They have a movie?
