The controversy of Mary Sues, and the recent Mary Sue "Favoring" fics. · 3:30pm Oct 29th, 2012
lately, there's this user, called KingofSquirrelz, that wrote two fics about looking at things, in the perspective of a very little (in fact not at all) liked type of character refered imfamously, as a Mary Sue. the stories "The Red Maned, Black Coated Alicorn Mary Sue Has a Birthday Party" and the new resent "The Red Maned, Black Coated Alicorn Mary Sue Has a Wake Up Call" have the same controversel thing: looking at Mary Sues in a sympathic light. while this got fans, sadly like my original and cannon MLP, it does have it's haters. seriously in the comments, there's people that are angry these stories were even allowed on the site, let alone the feature box, and i personly intend on staying out of it the best of my ability. if your a fan of these stories, hear me out why these stories have such poor favors.
A Mary Sue (sometimes just Sue), in literary criticism and particularly in fan fiction, is a fictional character with overly idealized and hackneyed mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as a wish-fulfillment fantasy for the author or reader. It is generally accepted as a character whose positive aspects overwhelm their other traits until they become one-dimensional. While the label "Mary Sue" itself originates from a parody of this type of character, most characters labelled "Mary Sues" by readers are not intended by authors as such. Male Mary Sues are often dubbed "Gary Stu", "Larry Stu", "Marty Stu", or similar names. in layman's terms, Mary Sues tend to be too perfect, too unoriginal, and considered the anus scum of a good story, and in fact may even ruin it.
because of that controversy alone, i am afraid to get involved. also, admitingly, i am aware, and in fact agree, that Mary Sues SUCK! but, the stories are proven good reguardless of mary sueisum even though i never actselly read them. i'm a coward like that, i fear bad opinions. so, i don't like or hate the stories, i don't know the stories, and i'm afraid to get involve in them in anyway, and i am certainly am NOT gonna riff them because of the conflicting views alone. if you want to give it a look, just check out KOS, and if you hate, understandable, if you like it, Prepare to have enemies because of the controversy. Opinion is a powerful, and destructive force. if you plan to see these stories, be ready to pick a side.
EDIT UPDATE: Now there is a story called The Red Maned Black Coated Alicorn Mary Sue gets Even. and controversy continues. and as usual, i am staying OUT of it.

Okay so, I have an upcoming fic.. that involves an Alicorn but it isn't a Mary stu at all. I'm giving him a few flaws. Would that help my story get likes or not change anything and simply get me more dislikes on the fic?
451559 opinions vary. some may like it, others would not. Alicorn OC stories are fairly common here, so likes and dislikes might be evenly matched, it has fans, but some think it started to lose flavor. but, to avoid that and get greater likes, you have to be sure your fic has a fresher verson of a been there, done that idea. does it help?

451781 i meant, not do what's already been done. for exsample, some Alicorn OC stories are basicly over-powered HIE (Human In Equestia) stories, like, a guy getting placed in Equestia, becames an Alicorn, and, an also very common trait in these kind of stories, where they have to fight a great of evil of some kind, either something already established in the canon series, or something you made up. now often times, they can be different from eachother and can be done right to avoid being another generic copy, but still, Alicorn OC stories mostly have a pretty predicable thing, that they're either human, or are borned Alicorn, and that there's ALWAYS some form of great evil they must defeat! now on how you plan to make that fresh and new or even something differnet all togather is for you to deside.
451801 Well let's put it this way, I have an Alicorn OC but it isn't mines and it is NOT the Main Character, simply a supporting character. I tend to make him have small problems instead of making him overpowered. And trust me, he won't be strong enough to defeat Chrysalis. Unless he gets HELP from the main character. See?

Yeah. I was thinking about reading those. They seem interesting and I'd like to see where they go with it. I personally hate it when somebody thinks of one of my characters as a 'Mary Sue' when that isn't the case at all.
Also, HOW do you edit blogs? I've tried and I just can't figure it out!
459238 go to the "Blog" settings in your user name, it's under stories settings, above groups, click it and you'll see a slection of past blogs. next to them are Pencils (for editing) and a garbage can (for deleting, fittingly), now, click on the pencel and simpley, change what you want to change, and add the later stuff. first grade material. that way, you won't have to make blog clones of the same subject. oh, and remember the controversy. the stories make Mary Sues likeable, and some people are not fond of the idea of making Mary Sues "Likeable", and i made the reasons why already appearent.
