Something that I have spent some time on over the years considering, is how do my ponies actually look when I'm writing about them? Of course I could simply go with the canon show style and be done with it, but something I have been aware of is that in many cases with animation, ponies included, the head is rather out of proportion to the body. Japanese anime is of course practically defined by this characteristic. Its for this reason, knowing that actually seeing a pony from the show in person would be rather disturbing due to the cartoon body proportions, I tend to visualize the ponies as having more natural and less cartoon-like proportions. And in some ways I think this helps me with my writing as it seems that it is easier to imagine a pony with more natural proportions being able to be and act sexy. Its not that I can't find the show style sexy, its just that the more cartoon-y the style the harder it has to try to be sexy. Having said that, I also find the other extreme even harder to deal with. Real life ponies are not at all, um, well, let's just say that's one fetish I don't have.

To show roughly how Twilight, or say, Rarity looks in comparison to an older alicorn in my head when I'm writing these characters. Effectively, the differences are reduced.
In summation; diapers don't look as good on a pony with a head twice the size of her butt. At least for me.
What about more equine features? Can they eat grass? Do they have udders? Do the mares have estrus? Do the vagina have the fat lips and elongated shapes of real horses?
