Fanfic idea question · 12:28am Oct 13th, 2012
This pertains primarily to the rewrite to The Cutie Mark Adventures, and I'm curious if people would be interested in this idea.
I had the thought yesterday of crossing MLP FIM with the Shrek Universe by having the CMC get dropped in their world, and found by Puss 'n Boots, who along with the help of Donkey, must try to find a way to help the CMC get back home.
Would anyone be interested in such a story?
Shrek and FiM?
I'm not really a fan of Shrek, so I have to be passive about that, but I consume anything entertaining, so go ahead, dear Author!
*shrug* Anything with Apple Bloom is ah-mah-zahng.
Shure. Buy some Ahpples!
When writing a crossover, you need to ask yourself why you are you writing it because, "Hey that sounds like a great idea!" or is there more to it?
For example: Batman goes to Equstria. Sounds awesome right? Until you ask what, exactly Batman would do in Equestria. Think about it for a moment.
...Got nothing? Exactly. Batman would just be awkwardly there with no purpose, because every problem the ponies could have, they can handle without him. There's no conflict that he has to be there to resolve.
Now if the entirety of Arkham Asylum were to be transported to Equestria with Batman and a rogue's gallery of his greatest villains (all ponified of course)...you can see it in your mind, can't you? That's the point. The villains create conflict the ponies simply cannot handle without Batman's help.
Stories need conflict. Big ones (Poison Ivy's turned the Everfree forest hostile, Joker's tricked Pinkie into being the new Harley, getting back to Gotham) but equally as important, little ones (How Celestia's inevitable confrontation with Batman will go, how does Bruce keep his identity secret, how do you throw a Batarang with hooves). The big ones give it bones, the little ones give it meat, but it's only when you have both at once that a story becomes more than just words on a page. (Or screen)
Now you're initial question was about the CMC and Shrek. I have my own opinion, but it doesn't matter. What does is if the story in your head is something you can see. A tale full of problems and antagonist for the heros to overcome. With opportunities for learning and growth that ultimately make the heros better for what they have experienced. You don't need it all right now, just enough to get you excited about writing. If its not there, if all you have is 'This sounds like a great idea' then don't write it until you have more. And if there isn't more then don't write at all.
...I got all lecturey.
