Well this is my first blog entry and i am testing before i submit an story

i am going to talk about fanfics with aternative universe tags

let's start with canon this is the main continuity the episodes of season 1 and 2 and next season 3
canon facts
twilight has a brother
rarity has a sister
applejack is the middle sister of the apples in poniville
this is normally immutable by the fans, but sometimes there is an ascended fanon like derpy but is pretty rare

second is expanded universe these are the core of the fanfics expanding in canon facts to do a story
these must follow a rule it cannot contradict canon these are things that expand and suplement the canon world,
expanded universe facts
luna control the stars
applejack is an orphan
luna is nocturnal
sometimes expanded universe become a form of alternative universes

Continuation these are the fics that are after the last episode normally these became divergences later althought sometimes it can be "i called it" moment, these can be from a long range of time from a few hours after the last episode to millenia later

now the truly alternative universes
Divergence a change in the past that alters everything it can be a big change or a small one but it always is one, the timing and the size of the change can vary but the repercutions are directly proportional to both for example a small change spike sneezed and burned the mare in the moon book then the repercutions is that twilight would go blind against nightmare moon and it would become really grimdark after that, another example is in the great series the lunaverse a medium change in the long past cause a radically diferent present (i wont spoil it but you can read the fic an early reunion t to apreciate it it)

alternate/parallel universe
radical changes to the canon one this is tricky because it can become a fic in name only, this is one of the hardest to pull since you must cause plausibility to the changes or a change in tone a good example of this is humanized mane cast a popular subject but if you go this route you must have a shy girl as fluttershy, an athletic tomboy as rd, a dorky nerd as twilight, a fashionista as rarity
a genki girl as pinkie pie and a hard working girl as applejack thats the mistake a lot of people have done
if you dont you will have an OC called fluttershy and probably loads of dislikes
