Grammarly is a great editor, but... · 9:05am May 26th, 2017
After the uniquely aggressive way the editor's creators advertised it (it appeared on a porn site I once visited). I got tempted to try out the electronic editor Grammarly.
To my surprise, I actually found it to be a very useful tool. Some of its pros include its ability to find mistakes you might otherwise have missed, or even not know about. It's easy to use interface that really helps highlight the suggestions it provides, and the feature that gave me the most chuckles is the progress report you get each week comparing you to other Grammarly users as if urging you to write better.
However, I have two problems with it.
The first one is that I cannot, in good consciousness, recommend this to a first timer, or even someone without a proper command of the English language. The reason is that the ratio of accurate prediction of the algorithm, to me, is 65/45.
Basically, only 65% of the recommendations and corrections are actually useful, the others being the algorithm not really understanding what the written sentence actually conveys. I'm saying that after I went back and used it on my entire story quest for earth pony magic.
From changing foals to goals, My use of Evening as a proper noun became the evening, stare turning into started. Those being the ones on top of my head.
Granted, the program doesn't automatically change the incorrect word (like in Microsoft words) but it doesn't help when fixing long chapters.
The other problem I have is with the creator's premium services.
I don't think the company behind Grammarly believes that correct grammar is priceless because advanced mistakes can only be corrected behind a premium wall which I didn't pay for so I wouldn't know what do they even mean by advance mistakes.
Curse you! Capitalist Scum!
But the fact that premium includes an anti-plagiarism algorithm is enticing enough for me to give it a try sometimes in the future when plagiarism becomes a concern of mine, so I am tempted to try premium services sometimes in the future.
But that won't stop me from making a rant over it.
Anyway, what do you guys think? Did anyone else try the program? If so, what are your impressions of it? If not, will you give it a try?
I use Granmarly on a daily basis, but yeah, sometimes it's wrong. Horribly wrong
