Stanger Than Fiction · 4:15am Feb 16th, 2017
There is a saying, that fiction suffers from having to be believable, while truth enjoys no such limitation. An example:
My niece got a job working the front desk of a motel. After the first hour of her first shift, the manager told her that he felt poorly, and was going to lay down. And so he went and locked himself in his room.
My niece has not at this point been trained to operate the till, or the registration computer. The manager would not answer his door. When customers came she was forced to turn them away, for having no idea how to accept customers. She watched Doctor Phil, and read all 400 negative reviews of the motel on an internet site, some written by employees. Granted, she had enough ambition to play around with the computer until she had worked out on her own how to register people, but still. Based on this, she, on her second day, was a crew trainer. As I said to her, this seems less like a job, and more like a sit-com.
So. Don't let anyone ever tell you that your fic seems unrealistic. Reality is unrealistic.
