My internet and other stuff · 11:37pm Feb 6th, 2017
I don't normally write blog post that's not a story update in someway, mostly because I don't really have a lot of say. But considering it's going to be awhile before I get to make anymore I figured I should do it while I can. At the end of the week I'm moving to a new house and it's going to be a few months before I get internet out there. While it's going to suck for an internet addict like me to go without I'm trying to look on the positive on of this, and I'm hopping in that time I can get some writing done, because it's not like I've gotten much done lately.
For the past few months I've been in a bit of a writing rut. I think this may be do to my inner-critic developing faster then my writing skill. Every time I start trying to write I feel like I'm a kindergartener with crayons trying to color within the lines. But despite this I'm still getting stuff written, slowly as all hell, but still.
One thing my new critic as helped me see is a few annoying habits I have when writing. Such as:
Adding characters and other random things to the story 'because it sounds good.' Seriously, I don't know why I keep doing this. In Twilight, Soldier of War there are at least three characters I did this with; I could remove them all and lose nothing from to story. It's like the idea of Chekhov's gun is just lost on me, granted I didn't know of this rule when I first started writing on this site, but that doesn't apply to all of my stories.
Tunnel vision. On some of my stories I've been so focused on the central idea for the story that I will let everything else suffer for it. Case in point, Wrath of a People. For those that never read it the first version, Wrath of a People was originally a genocidal Equestria trying to kill off the Changelings fic. It wasn't until someone in the comments pointed out that a genocidal Equestria is, in fact, bad. The reason I never realize up until that point was because ponies killing the changelings wasn't the central idea it was just something to push the story alone.
So with any luck by the time my internet is back I'll have some stuff written. I have a one shot I need to get done, not to mention one of my stories that needs to be fixed.
