Well, it depends on the fiction. In the case of MLP FiM, there are mostly female characters and they interact with each other the most. As such people are more inclined to pair FlutterDash or ApplePie, over say RainbowMac. Also it worth noting that among men, it can be supposed that since men typically like women, they might like two at the same time, as for women, it can be argued that since women to an extent understand... how to... um... satisfy one another... theoretically.
It should be worth noting that female fans of shows with a lot more male characters than female tend to make ships out of the male characters.
Well, there are a lot of female characters... Plus, let's face it, mare on mare is hot. (Oh, so totally going to Hell for saying that.)
