The Writing Habit, My Broken ‘W’, and a Progress Report · 9:18am Nov 7th, 2016
I want to start off by saying I’m not one to do these sort of ‘personal’ blog posts. Recently, though, I decided to start doing these things (maybe on a weekly basis) to get back into the habit of writing regularly. It’s gonna be weird writing these. Hell, in the past five years since publishing my first chapter on Fimfiction I’ve posted a blog about seven times, all of them to give a little update about upcoming chapters.
Five years. That’s a real long time to be publishing so-so ponyfic, ain’t it? It really isn’t surprising I’ve been at it this long. It’s a nice little escape from a not too glorious job and a not too glorious life. A lot changes in five years, especially in MLP, and especially in the fandom. Geez, I still remember when Alicorn Twilight was still just a far-fetched theory with fans insisting that if Twilight ever got wings it would mean the show’s absolute ruin.
Me, I never cared for that kind of theorizing or proselytizing. I was never as much a fan of the show as I was of the characters. Can you keep a secret? I stopped watching FiM after the second season. It shows in my writing, to me, the canon stopped being as interesting as what I could do with the setting. Right now, canon just feels like something that gets in my way. Something I have to constantly write around.
Maybe that’s why I like writing stories with Big Macintosh. He’s basically the only background pony I thought would never develop a personality of his own. A blank canvas to be done with in whatever way I saw fit.
Writing’s nice like that. A character can be anything you want, you just have to make it believable for the reader.
Speaking of which. Chapters for both Gathering the Elements and Getting Complicated are...getting written. I have about a thousand words in the latter and three thousand in the former. For those of you who’ve never heard of either: Getting Complicated is the sequel to Keeping it Simple, and Gathering the Elements...well...you’re gonna need to turn off your filters to see that one. I’m also thinking of continuing the Month of Fall and/or Concubine, but I don’t know yet. Maybe if people show some interest.
Oh, almost forgot to mention. I am all sorts of wrapped up in NaNoWriMo this year, and I like always I’m using it to focus on original fiction. I hate to say it but that means my ponyfic is gonna be put to the backburner. But I'll most likely have something out by December. Maybe a new chapter? Maybe a new oneshot? Eh, who knows? I certainly don't.
I’m gonna wrap this up before it hits five hundred words. The last thing I want to say is that my ‘w’ key is broken. Sometimes it types, sometimes it doesn’t. Like the worst kind of russian roulette except for, you kno, the dying kind. Anyway, I think I’ve rambled on enough.
See ya.
8 blog posts in 5 years. Good going
Well, isn't the point of fiction to just do what you like, whether it's kept in-character or out of it?
Canon is not something you have to always follow (I'll admit I don't particularly like many episodes since season 3 started airing those few years ago), worst case scenario just slap on the AU tag and you're good
Your w key is broken? That sounds awful. (Aful?) My previous laptop, the s key broke entirely, which prevented things like writing my name. Or my address. Or a lot of things. S is a rather common letter.
That damned 'w' key. My 'u' key comes up sometimes and I need to really smash it back down. After that, it works fine.
