Legend of Everfree [Kinda spoilery] · 5:03pm Oct 5th, 2016
So . . . it was alright. I liked it. Enjoyed it, even. I just didn't love it.
Let me explain. First of all, the opening song has definitely improved quite a bit with using, I think, an acoustic instrumental instead of the techno-pop music, like in Rainbow Rocks. (I'm an anti-dubstep person, sue me) Speaking of the songs, I loved all of them. Embrace the Magic was a bit 'ehhh', since it has that generic 'find the good in your flaws' sort of tone, but that was still beautiful with Sunset's vocals.
Rebecca Soishet's Shoichet has gotten better since her solo in Rainbow Rocks!
Of course, for everyone who's been here long enough knows I got a kick out of The Midnight in Me, (Jekyll and Hyde vibes, woooooo). Unfortunately, We Will Stand for Everfree, although having that dark tone and impressive animation, had a major problem that prevented it from being my favorite, or even a favorite. It shares the same problem with the movie itself, which I'll get into in a moment.
The Midnight in Me has a great instrumental and lyrics, and, Celestia Above, a chilling performance! (Rebecca Shoichet, you're amazing!) As for Twilight, you can see the kaleidoscope of emotions on her face and around her. You can feel the guilt she's going through and the fear of her friends seeing through her, and that's what makes the animation so dm amazing!
And now . . . why We Will Stand for Everfree, and by extension, the movie itself fell flat. This is kind of where it gets spoiled a bit, so I'd recommend to stop reading by now, or don't mouse at the spoiler tags.
There's no real tension in either. Literally, the only reason the villain, and their song, even exists, is to save the camp from a generic greedy businessman. Yeah.
Equestria Girls? A fiery she-demon brainwashing students to overthrow Equestria? That's pretty cool, if not a little dumb.
Rainbow Rocks? Three sirens from Ancient Equestria who can leech off anyone's negative emotions and actually almost beat the Human Six if not for Best Human? Awww, yeah! Take my money!
Friendship Games? Another, less-fiery she-demon who's drawn to magic by a thirst for knowledge, and almost destroys the dimensions between two worlds just to learn, and fuels my Jekyll-Hyde fangirlness? Need I say more?
Legend of Everfree. Save the camp. Yup. The whole song is basically, 'Hey, this guy's trying to take my great-greandparents' camp away, so I'm turning into a monster to seal it off from the rest of the world with you guys inside so he can't.' Is that okay, too bad, Imma doing it anyway.' And since literally the only thing at stake here is a camp and the life of [REDACTED], it just makes the song, and the danger of the whole movie watered down.
And the song itself just doesn't have that bone-chilling flair that TMiM had. I don't know what it is, maybe because the voice actor is new to the team, but it felt like they weren't giving their all.
To be honest, the movie felt like it was gearing more to the comedy than anything else. But, with that said, I do have good things to say about this movie, the (second, because the songs were my favorite) most valid point being the comedy.
A lot of jokes made me laugh, especially who Fluttershy gets paired with when they get grouped for tents, and the self-awareness of Flash and Pony Twilight's relationship, and now Sci-Twi and Timber's. (I kept thinking of Lily Peet's 'Do you really have to ship right now' joke whenever it was brought up, and imagined asking that to Meghan Mccarthy )
I found the characters, new and old, charming and likable, especially, Gloriosa Daisy, (why does that name remind me of a Harry Potter spell? I don't even read HP!) who I can actually relate to with the whole 'sit your butt down and let me do this for you' attitude.
Oh, yeah, and the whole running gag how the Human Seven can't keep the dock whole for longer than five minutes got me gasping for breath.
Lastly, the ending, the one that implies that Equestrian magic is seeping into the human world, which might a shtstorm's about to hit in the next - if they're planning it - movie.
So, overall? I give the movie a 7/10. The plot leaves you dissatisfied with the lack of danger, but everything else hits home.
