I think Twilight's best pony because I relate to her the best.

Equestria Girls Blog 2: Rainbow Rocks · 5:11am Sep 30th, 2016

If you read my last blog post, you probably know two things. One, I pretty much hated Legend of Everfree. Two, Rainbow Rocks ranked surprisingly low on my list of favorite Equestria Girls movies despite how popular it is in the fandom. For the record, I enjoyed Rainbow Rocks. The only reason why it’s ranked so low on the list is because I honestly enjoyed the other two movies better.

I do, however, understand why it’s such a huge fan favorite. I’ll willingly admit that it does a lot of things better than the first movie. The plot was more complex, the villains were more threatening, Sunset Shimmer got a TON of character development, and the songs were more memorable. The first movie was just better suited to my tastes. That’s all.

Despite everything that it does right, there are a few reasons why Rainbow Rocks didn’t suit my tastes as much as the first movie did. The biggest reason is the soundtrack. Look, the songs were good from a purely musical standpoint, but most of the soundtrack consisted of villain songs and ego songs, and I kind of dislike villain songs on principle. If you enjoy them, that is of absolutely no concern to me. I personally feel that villain songs are what goes on inside a villain’s head set to music (admittedly good music), and I enjoy being inside of a villain’s head about as much as C.S. Lewis enjoyed writing The Screwtape Letters. Well, on the bright side, villain songs are supposed to have sordid lyrics, and the more sordid the villain song, the more I dislike it, so I guess the songwriters did their job.

The second reason why I preferred the first movie over Rainbow Rocks is because Twilight was absolutely inspiring in the first movie. She basically took what she learned over the three seasons prior and through example, encouraged people living in an admittedly sanitized version of our world to be part of something bigger than themselves. Because of what she did, she ended up changing everyone’s lives for the better. A part of me kind of wishes that changing things for the better was that easy in real life, but I digress. Anyway, because I admired what Twilight accomplished in the first movie so much, I felt a little disheartened and unsettled watching everything that she inspired, including the Humane 5’s friendship, unravel in the second movie. Fortunately, watching Sunset slowly learn to step up and be part of the group kind of made up for that.

In conclusion, unlike Legend of Everfree, I actually liked Rainbow Rocks. I just liked the other movies better. If you disagree with me, you are totally free to do so.
