Badlands Vacation Pictures · 2:13am Sep 8th, 2016

Sunrise at Sage Creek Campground.

We had to set up a tarp to protect the flame of our camping stove from the 20 mph winds that regularly came through. The tarp was pretty cheap on Amazon and did not survive the windy week.

Our campsite for Days 2-6.

Most prairie dogs darted back into their holes if you came closer than 20 feet. The one on the left tolerated me up to six, and then his partner popped his head out in curiosity.

Bison, or buffalo, by far the most common sight in the badlands wilderness.

My camera's panoramic mode was hit and miss the whole week, but here's one of a herd of bison that turned out.

Timing couldn't have been better on this shot.

Brady on our one and only hike out into the Sage Creek Wilderness Area. The hills did us in within an hour.

Antelope out in the prairie.

Badlands roadblock. Bison frequently crossed the 12-mile gravel road to Sage Creek. Your only choice was to sit and wait. Honking only pisses them off.

Bison, for the most part, didn't care one bit about how many people there were in the campground. They came and went where they pleased, usually keeping a distance of about thirty feet. Usually.

With a calf present, I only dared take shots this close from the safety of the car.

Sighted a hawk on our last drive out from camp as we departed.

Prairie Winds Overlook, probably my favorite stop on the Badlands Loop.

These three rams caused traffic to grind to a halt for pictures. I'm guessing they aren't that common in the park; these were the only three we saw all week.

Yours truly, out in one of the prairie overlooks.
