OC's and why I hesitate to read something that has these labels. · 11:10am Jul 18th, 2016
Ok like the title says, its about Original characters in stories and why I am reluctant when a story is labeled with this.
There times where a story is named to represent a character that is Canon like sunset shimmer but there is an OC that has significant role that challenges the role of main character in terms of screen time, development and involvement of a story. To be blunt about it I don't like stories that places significance of someone who is unknown to the reader.
Stories like the "main 6/7 and a mysterious new character" Dumping an OC into a group like this make me want to instantly reject the story. You can't just place an unknown to an already dynamic set of group or story and expect people to relate to the said character.
(How would you feel if you bought a bundle of Books written by a favorite author and found out one of the books is written by a different author you haven't even heard of)
But there those stories that focus on the OC and considers the canon characters as side characters, These are stories I might even put in my fave. There are also when the OC is a supporting or a villain like a Butler, a mysterious informant or the guy next door that may appear with the main character as a support role or they just appear here and there. thus these stories will never confuse the reader of who is leading the story and eventually the reader will come to like the OC's reason for being in the story.
Stories Like Free-port Venture, Equestria girls Racers, Fangs / Fangs: the order are stories that has OC significance but it doesn't feel like they are trying to steal the focus from the main characters themselves.
