Never have I ever thought that the randomness and insanity that many fanfic authors seem to come up with could ever possibly be crammed into one fanfic, explained in manner that made logical sense, and allowed for hilarious and outrageous scenarios before I read MLP Time Loops by Saphroneth.
Tagged with the Comedy tag for very good reason, this fic utilizes the old fanfic phenomenon known as looping. This is where the main character of a form of entertainment media repeatedly relives their story again and again in a manner that is similar to the plot from the movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray.
The only difference is that these repeats (known as loops) can sometimes vary in almost any number of ways; from something as insignificant as one background character’s hair color being different, to any number of extremes (like everyone is the opposite gender, a different species, or everyone is suddenly 20k years in the future). The differences can really be up to anyone’s imagination.
There’s much more to the story, but sufficed to say, MLP Time Loops is a comedy that strives to take advantage of the possible insanity this plot idea offers in nearly every way possible (while still keeping its enforced Everyone rating).
It is also an ongoing fanfic that, while updates range from far and few inbetween, that to this day (February 29th, 2016) has is sporting a whopping 172 chapters!
When should I read it?
I personally find this fic to be ideal for reading on my breaks at work. Fantastic laughs that help me relax before going back to the old grind, and I can put down nearly at any time thanks to it sporting multiple loops per chapter (multiple chapters within a chapter, so to speak).
When was it published?
It first was published on April 19th, 2013, landing it two months following the finale of Season 3 of MLP, and two months prior to the release of Equestria Girls.
However, with the updates and worldbuilding of the series, MLP Time Loops manages to logically explain away it’s inconsistencies, abandon them, and integrate the new changes all at once.
So when reading, expect some pre-season 4 mentalities to start out with, and watch as the new developments in the Brony fandom make themselves known and evident as you read through this gut-busting fic.
What would you rate this fic?
I’d easily give it a 9/10 for its quality. It’s a fic that’s not only not meant to be taken seriously (sans a few large chapters that can be skipped if the reader so chooses since those chapters never have any impact outside of themselves), but also can’t be taken seriously. However, you don’t mind that one bit as you read it to get some of the greatest laughs you’ll ever have from a fanfic.
