Whenever I read other fanfics I usually think, man I should have thought of that, this is genius! The only feeling that is infinitely worse is when someone publishes a story that is so similar to what you were in the middle of writing and it makes your story seem like it was copied.
This my friends, is the feeling I got when I read a part of Past Sins today. While the story itself (so far) is awesome, as I read on the story became very similar to one I had in the works. I can already see the parallels between the two stories. Lets review the checklist of similar important plot points...
- Child incarnation of Nightmare Moon
- Dark cultic sacrifice
- Kid looked after by Twilight
- Bad guy named Nexus (even the name was the same!)
I mean common!!! Compared to this, my story is crap and a stupid wannabe story.
GAH!
This isn't the first time this has happened and it certainly won't be the last.
This makes another story idea go down the toilet...
Oh Midway Brige, your late night laments always remind me that I'm not the only struggling author out there.
Yeah... ironically I know what your talking about. I just posted a new story and a few people have asked me if I based it off a story called White Box by Chromosome. Made me want to facedesk because I didn't intend for there to be so many similarities.
I don't think it's the end of the world for you, though. Now you know what to avoid. Just try to sidestep the similarities. It's okay to have a few.
