Hardcover talks about plot: The Crystalling · 12:36am Apr 3rd, 2016
The Crystalling was pretty good. It wasn’t great. A lot of different plot threads and not a lot of time to flesh them all out. Each one was good in its own right, but we never got to really see the struggles of Shining/Cadance’s parenthood and how they deal with it, nor did Starlight and Sunburst really do much besides sit in a house and talk (or not talk) about stuff.
I wish each new season didn’t have to have a crisis. The weather disaster got in the way of all the good stuff. Why can’t the conflict just be Shining and Cadance trying to be parents while Starlight and Sunburst mend fences?
I think Twilight’s arc as a teacher suffered most. She wasn’t much of a teacher at all, but maybe in future episodes that will be better.
The jury’s still out on Starlight. She can stay for now, I guess, but currently her only value is in being Twilight’s student and how that forces Twilight to grow. We already have a character seeking to adapt to ideas of friendship (Discord), so she’ll have to do some work to set herself apart.
Flurry Heart’s cool I guess.
Twilight’s Parents have nice voices.
Sunburst is a mega cutie.
