My Little Pony Friendship is Magic: Season 6 premier · 3:05am Apr 1st, 2016
The man who helped bring you The Passion of the Christ is back and this time he's starting season six of My Little Pony: Friendship is Obligatory. Watch as the main characters head to the Crystal Empire again. Watch as they discuss topics like friendship and the plot! Be amazed at how the princesses can who can move the sun, moon and defeat entire armies can't fight snow! Finally watch as the Hell spawn, a thing which should not exist yet does, a thing that sprang forth from Princess Cadence's loins reaps untold peril (snow) upon the ponies of the Crystal Empire melts books and destroys everything in it's path!
Meanwhile, watch as two old friends reunite for the first time in a long time. He's not a wizard Harry but he is an out of work librarian living on the public dole who may very well save the day with his inability to do magic well but may very well become the hierophant of the Crystal Empire. She's the former communist cult leader of the People's Temple Our Town who doesn't really want to meet up with him again. Watch as they have awkward exposition and possibly save the day with a little help from plot convenience.
So, yeah I watched the beginning of this season. It was a fairly mundane affair. It was rushed when it didn't need to be. It had too many characters who had no business being there. Let me put it this way, if they had left it with Shining Armor, Cadence, Flurry Heart, Twilight, Spike, Night Light and Twilight Velvet, we could have had a suitable family episode. You could have even had the baby pull some of its shenanigans and even endanger the empire (in a comedic way mind you). In the episode The new grandparents can kind of show Cadence and company how to handle things. Maybe we get some embarrassing stories of Shining Armor and Twilight Sparkle along the way too.
The whole baby being an alicorn issue could have been brought to the attention Luna and Celestia in the third episode and then we could have had an episode that focuses around them and Twilight as they try to figure out just what that might mean. Starlight Glimmer might actually be able to help out here because maybe she knows something the princesses forgot about. The rest of the season could then be devoted to figuring that out (with the eventual help of twilight's friends) and Starlight Glimmer working on getting better at having real friendships and the various mishaps that occur along the way.
Sunburst shows up later on and the two of them start to recreate, albeit awkwardly, their own friendship that has it's ups and downs. Then by the time the season finale rolls around we get the answer to why it happened, find out there's some string pulling going on that made the baby essentially overpowered and why. Then again for all I know, it may already be written that Flurry Heart is female Jesus pony who will die for the sins of all ponies and start up a new way of thinking about the various virtues and magics that encompass their world. I mean Haber was a go-fer on POTC.
Or not.
All of that said I didn't hate this episode. There are good things within it. I liked the character design of Sunburst. I even like the idea about making Shining Armor and Princess Cadence parents. I thought it was funny just how worn out they were. Yet for those moments this premier wasn't engaging. It felt more like a mid season episode that everyone forgets about later on. I honestly found myself getting distracted at times by other things I could be doing and had to refocus. That's a really unfortunate way to start a season.
(On a side note I'm also not seeing what's so great about alicorns anymore, but I may go into that in a different post.)
Stats: 20 dead bodies... per year due to horse related accidents according to a 2008 survey, 0 breasts, exposition dump alert, princess fu, snow fu, magic beam fu, baby fu.
Shout outs:
Ian Hanlin for being in Afflicted and playing Sunburst who when it is revealed his old friend traveled through time and destroyed Equestria says, "You traveled through time?"
Kelly Sheridan for doing something called Lolirock which hearing the title made me laugh myself silly. Oh and doing what she could vocally with a meh script as Starlight Glimmer.
Josh Haber for Assisting Mr. Gibson. I don't know how difficult that could have been but, the sky's the limit on that one.
Where is the "Stats" and the "Shout Outs"? How am I suppose to know how many dead bodies? Or funny/interesting trivia?
