Top Six Worst Pokemon Boss Battles · 6:44pm Mar 30th, 2016

Welp, I'm going to hell.

Hello once again, everyone! SuperKamek back again with another list! Well, obviously if there was going to be a positive, there would eventually be a negative. Yes, as much as I love the Pokemon franchise, there's no denying that it still has some issues, whether it be about the gameplay, story, characters or boss battles; the latter we, of course, we'll be talking about today. Yes, Pokemon has some pretty shitty boss fights in the series, and we're going to be talking about the worst of the worst.

Rules are simple! One boss fight from each generation, as mentioned before. What I consider a boss fight is any major battle against someone in the story (i.e. Gym Leader, Evil Team Leader, Elite Four, Champion, etc.). However, no "Pokemon" battles. Fights against legendaries are cinematic, yes, but they all boil down to how many balls it takes to eventually capture one. Only story battles as well! Rematches against gym leaders or fights against frontier brains don't count. I would also like to tell you that this is my own personal opinion! If you agree or disagree with the list, I will hold no judgement against you. Hell, even if you dislike N, more power to you!

That being said, let's go!

Number 6:
Alder

Theme:

Talk about a weak champion.

Alder is a different case when it comes to Pokemon. He IS the champion of the Unova region, but he's not the final boss of the game, which already downgrades his importance and whole "spectacular" thing most champions should have. However, I can look past all that. What I CAN'T look past is Alder's absolute shit team.

The Unovian champion comes packing with the most mediocre 5th generation Pokemon I can thing of, including Druddigon; or as many people know it as, the most "okay" dragon-type of all time. It has Outrage and Superpower, which gives it somewhat of a fighting chance, but the fact remains you more than likely have a dragon-type or an ice-type by this point. In fact, all of his Pokemon you more than likely have a strength against, as they're all Pokemon you've either seen before or have more weaknesses than a grass-type. His specialty is bug-type Pokemon, which I will admit is a good choice for the generation (as Gen 5 bug types were really good), but they all end up falling to the might of fast flying types. You see, because you fight Alder in post game, you already have access to other, stronger Pokemon from different regions. This made the elite four fun and challenging as they too had Pokemon from other regions, but Alder sticks to Unova for some reason. Because of this, most of his weaknesses are flying and fire without having any diversity in his team. It doesn't help his team's moves do NOT protect their typing in the slightest. Hey, great idea; let's give a grass-type move to a bug type so it has no chance of defending itself!

Overall, Alder's battle is leagues below Ghetsis's, and it's not worthy of the "final battle" title. Thankfully, it never was graced with a name. I suppose I should be thankful that Ghetsis took the role of final boss for this game, because this would have been disappointing. But Alder at least isn't the worst champion I've ever fought. More on that later...

Number 5:
Archer

Theme:

Ugh... And then there's this fucker.

Going from a really dumb boss to a really fragile one, we have the new boss of Team Rocket himself: Archer. With a name that should sound cool, and the fact he's the new boss of the infamous Team Rocket, you'd think that he'd at least put up some sort of a fight, right? Well, his team of under-leveled and under-evolved Pokemon says otherwise.

Archer is no threat whatsoever. Hell, not even in the remakes is he a threat! Y'know, the remakes; where everyone was improved for the better with brand-spanking new Pokemon and new moves at their disposal. Only with Archer, absolutely none of his Pokemon were improved between games, with the exception that one move was changed and his team's levels were increased by a whole two. Oh yeah, two levels higher; that'll scare away all those pesky kids! Admittedly, his team isn't horrible as it consists of a fairly bulky Koffing, a Houndour and a Houndoom. But that's just it! By this point of the game, you've already seen evolved Pokemon, not to mention the fact you just saw Weezing not a few battles prior to this one. Why not upgrade his team and give him a Weezing to compensate, huh? It's sad because he DID have a Weezing all the way back in Firered and Leafgreen when he was still just a nameless admin, not to mention he had a Golbat as well. You heard that right folks! His Weezing got so weak over the course of 3 years that devolved back into Koffing, and Archer replaced his Golbat (which could have easily become a Crobat, BTW) for a weaker version of his Houndoom. What were you THINKING GameFreak?!

This is especially sad when you realize that Petrel is a better team boss than this guy. Petrel, the guy with literally five Koffings and a Weezing put more of a fight than the actual head of Team Rocket. No wonder Giovanni left Team Rocket; they're all clearly a bunch of jokers.

Number 4:
Lt. Surge (Yellow)

Theme:

Choosing a terrible fight from Gen 1 was actually a little difficult... until I remembered this guy.

Admittedly, Lt. Surge from the original games was a decent challenge. But like most electric-type gyms, there's usually a ground-type location somewhere nearby where you can catch a Diglett, raise it up a bit, then absolutely sweep the gym like a maniac. Only in Pokemon Yellow, things are only slightly different...

You see, Lt. Surge has only one Pokemon in Yellow. Ironically, it's not even yellow. His only Pokemon, Raichu, should be able to put a decent amount of damage on you what with excellent moves like Thunderbolt, Mega Punch and Mega Kick. It's unfortunate that it goes down without a hitch. The only real challenge when going against his Raichu is that it has a slightly above-average level. Other than that, pretty much any single one of your Pokemon by this point could potentially wipe Lt. Surge clean in a single turn. That's it; that's the boss fight! I get that GameFreak was trying to capture the charm of the anime in Pokemon Yellow, what with Jessie and James, the Pikachu following you around and so on. But maybe you could have left some in some things to make the game more challenging. Y'know, like a boss's Pokemon?

Yeah, that's all I have for this entry. Moving right along...

Number 3:
???

Theme:

W-Wait, who is this woman again?

This is the seventh gym leader of Kalos. Remember her? Yeah, I didn't think so. The gym leaders in Kalos were already sort of bland, but at least they weren't completely forgettable. That is until you met Olympia here, who says three sentences in haiku and then proceeds to fight you. She doesn't even introduce herself before she's all like "Yeah, let's battle or whatever."!

At the very least, Olympia has some pretty stand-up and overall decent Pokemon in her arsenal. She starts off with a... ohh... Sorry, Sigilyph makes me queasy. Anyway, yes, she starts out with Sigilyph for her defenses, utilizing Light Screen and Reflect to reduce damage. Next off is a Slowking, which carries around Power Gem, Calm mind and Psychic, making an already decently beefy Pokemon stronger. But then we get to her lead Pokemon, Meowstic; an okay Pokemon we've already seen before and actually fought in a few battles prior to this one. It doesn't help Meowstic is actually weaker than the other Pokemon in Olympia's team, despite the increase of level. There could have easily been several other psychic-types around the region of, I dunno... 400+ Pokemon she could have chosen, but nope! We have to go with the most mediocre psychic-type of all time! Why not have Slowking as her main Pokemon, Sigilyph as her defense and, fucking... ANYTHING! Anything else would have compensated for Meowstic! I also love how in the Battle Chateau, her writ "challenges" have her remove one of her Pokemon for higher leveled Pokemon, but Meowstic is never replaced! Why can't I have a battle against just Sigilyph or Slowking?! They would have actually put up a decent fight instead of eyeball-ear cat over here!

Even when you begin the battle, she's all like "I'm psychic, therefore I have to be mellow and monotone. Wanna fu-". And if it couldn't get any worse, there's still more trainers on this list. Thankfully they aren't as forgettable as Olympia, but unfortunately they're unforgettable for the absolute wrong reasons.

Number 2:
Fantina

Theme:

It's difficult to decide if this boss is really easy or really hard. So I'll just call her absolute shit.

Pokemon Platinum was probably one of my favorite sister Pokemon games of all time. It had a lot of changes I was really okay with. More story elements and expanded characters? Sign me up! New locales and more challenging boss fights? Sounds good to me! Changing the order of gym leaders and making one of them weaker than the original fight? Oh, well, I mean... You didn't have to do that...

Fantina in Diamond and Pearl was a decent gym leader. Her gym was okay and her Pokemon were a fair challenge at the time, what with Gengar and Drifblim as the forerunners of her team. She wasn't the best leader, but at least she wasn't the worst. That is until Platinum came around and her team was scrapped for simplicity. Her Gengar was downgraded back to Haunter status, and her Drifblim was replaced with a Duskull. What? Why? Drifblim was a better Pokemon than Duskull! Actually no, I know why; In the original Diamond and Pearl, Fantina was the 5th gym leader you fought. In Platinum, she was the 3rd since Hearthome city came before Veilstone city and Pastoria city. I've always wondered why you couldn't just make it like Pearl and Diamond and extend the game, if only for an hour or two. That way, you could make Fantina an even better gym leader than before. And if you wanted to make it more of a challenge, why not just give her Duskull alongside her original 3 Pokemon? Increase her levels and give her new moves instead of hindering her and making her weaker than her original counterpart! Oh, and her battle sucks as well. Her Pokemon use mostly cheap ghost and psychic-type moves like Confuse Ray, Hypnosis, Shadow Sneak, Future Sight and Shadow Ball. Oh, and all of her Pokemon have the Levitate ability, possibly making her aggravatingly difficult or piss easy. Again, with Drifblim, it had Aftermath with dealt damage to your Pokemon and make the battle more of a challenge, but what do I know, right? Clearly GameFreak knows all!

Thankfully, all of the other gym leaders were improved and all have very fun fights. Fantina is the only gym leader this has ever happened to in the series. Oh, and her gym sucks.

Number 1:
Wallace (Champion)

Theme:

Allow me to be blunt: FUCK THIS BOSS.

I only recently played Pokemon Emerald, but I can safely say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. The bosses were improved from the last game and more challenging, the battle frontier was fun, and the story was improved for the better. However, I think most of us can agree replacing Steven as the final boss of the game for Wallace was a pretty shit idea on GameFreak's part.

Wallace is not the final boss of Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire, nor their remakes. Just Emerald. Why? What was so bad about Steven that you had to axe him for role of the last boss? True, fighting Steven as a superboss in Emerald was pretty fun, but... no, wait, getting off topic. If his concept wasn't bad already, he's another water-type boss! In a region with a water-type evil team and a water boss not an hour before this one, Wallace will already feel like a waste of time and space. And I cannot STAND the fight with Wallace. How about that lovely lineup of Pokemon he has, hmm? He starts with a Ludicolo with Leech Seed and Double Team for stalling, and from there it's just a cluster-fuck of hell and pain without end. There's Tentacruel for poisoning, Wailord with Rain Dance because fuck you, Whiscash and Gyarados for spamming every single powerful move in the known universe, and that, fucking, MILOTIC! Forget that Milotic is already a beefy Pokemon and realize just how OP it is what with it's high defenses combined with the moves Toxic for aggravation, Surf for sweeping, Ice Beam for freezing, and Recover because fuck you. However, it gets worse! The first elite four member's lowest leveled Pokemon is 46. Milotic's level is FIFTY-EIGHT. That's a 12 level difference from just four boss fights, and chances are you won't have leveled up that much by the time the challenge is over. And you might say: "Wallace isn't that hard, you just have to grind", or "Wallace isn't that hard, you just have to pick Treeko as your starter".

Y'know what that tells me? That tells me that you have to prepare for one boss fight in the game instead of making a well-rounded team to complete the other 99% of the game cartridge. Does that sound like fun to you? Going through a routine of Pokemon each time you play Emerald? Yeah, I didn't think so.

And that's the list! Did you enjoy or agree with it?

Oh, and what are your least favorite boss fights in the series? I'm actually really curious as to know who you think should have been in this list. Put your answers down in the comments below! Until next time, this is SuperKamek saying thank you, have a great night, and if Pokemon Sun and Moon is anything like these six bosses here, I swear to god I will blow up the world!

...no, wait, I'll do that anyway. :rainbowkiss:

1. You completely forgot to mention Fantinas Mismagius, which is so CHEAP in Platinum
2. Olympia is so easy, forgettable and disappointing, I even forgot her name in my language (I think it's Astrid). But X/Y had a disappointing boss lineup in general, because of A. low level caps B. three pokemon limit (four for elite four and flare boss) AND C. the strongest pokemon had to be a Kalos pokemon
The only time time I have been defeated in X/Y was Korinna! (Her Hawlucha caught me off-guard)

1. Ah, yes, sorry about that. :twilightsheepish: Just didn't feel the need to, y'know?
2. Probably because Hawlucha is one of the only redeemable Pokemon from gen 6. :rainbowlaugh:

1. Yeah, completely unimportant that the third leader uses a fully evolved ghost-type with shadow ball, magical leaf and the usual annoying ghost attacks:trixieshiftright:
2. Well for me these are Greninja, Aurorus and Vivillon (which is btw the perfect weapon against said Hawlucha)

Still, when Mismagius is on your side... :rainbowdetermined2:
Also for me, my favorite Kalos Pokemon were Greninja, Aegislash, Diancie and Zygarde.

Yeah, I completely forgot about Archer!:rainbowlaugh:
As for Alder, I never really thought of him as a champion. Instead, I like the elder role he fills in Black and White 2.

No battle is too hard when you only use your starter pokemon the whole game.

3837811
Everyone forgot about Archer. :rainbowlaugh:

The funny thing is that Alder actually isn't too bad in Black and White 2. All of his Pokemon are lower leveled, but all have been given far greater moves than previously. Not to mention his team is a lot more rounded. For example, he has a Conkeldurr and a Braviary, not to mention his Escavalier now has Swords Dance.

3837816
Oh, I'd beg to differ... :twilightsheepish:

3837865 Well, at least if you chose Chimchar.

3837902
Ah, my first Pokemon... Such memories. Remember when we were all kids and we were just really, really stupid? :rainbowlaugh:

Yeah... those guys were pretty bad... Especially Platinum Fantina. You don't understand how pissed off I was when I battled her. She was too damn easy!

...

Btw, dud you see Soup?

3838212 I've only played Platinum and Chimchar wrecks everything.

3838218
This?

Yeah, I have.

3838224
Yeah, but that's no fun! If you want a challenge, why not play a nuzlocke? :rainbowkiss:

3838233

Yup. Thats it! That was so stupid and funny...
