    Displaced story idea

Those words in the title felt so dirty as I typed them. Even with most of my blog posts pertaining to this particular genre deleted, there are still enough remaining to attest to the fact that I fucking loathe displaced fics. My very oldest blog post (that hasn't been deleted) is me giving off about them when they were first emerging, that was back in mid-2014, that's how much of a die hard

    Bullet Point review

A short while ago I was contacted by Emerald Comet who sent me the link to a review he did alongside Anime Wolf Gamer of Bullet Point. I thought the video was great, and both my proofreader and I found their criticisms to be fair and welcome. After seeing the review, I watched a

    Season 5 Finale

So I finally got around to watching it today, my partner wanted to watch it with me so I had to hold off a week, and trying to avoid spoilers for a week was no easy task. I had to remove sites like deviant art and FIMfiction from my favourites just so I wouldn't be tempted to go on them and see the slightest thing that could ruin it, although I did catch snippets of blogs and posts saying how

Those words in the title felt so dirty as I typed them. Even with most of my blog posts pertaining to this particular genre deleted, there are still enough remaining to attest to the fact that I fucking loathe displaced fics. My very oldest blog post (that hasn't been deleted) is me giving off about them when they were first emerging, that was back in mid-2014, that's how much of a die hard despiser I am. So needless to say this is the strangest topic for me to be entertaining.
Recently after encountering a parody story taking the piss out of displaced fics and a rather entertaining blog post by someone, I started thinking about what it would take to make a good displaced fic. The obvious point is actually being good at writing, which far, far too many of the displaced authors I've seen simply are not. But then even if it was Pen Stroke writing one I'd probably still hate it, the reason for this is usually because the main character is a self-insert, gary stu wangster. The kind of character that speaks volumes about the person writing it, and the volumes are written with bile instead of ink, and on used toilet roll instead of paper. The kind of character who doesn't need inserted into the MLP universe, but desperately needs inserted into a wood chipper. In that oldest blog post I questioned why they don't just write about the actual character they're bastardising going to Equestria, instead of the thinly veiled caricatures of themselves turning into the character and then going to Equestria. They might as well just say 'I am the most uninteresting, unappealing person in the world, I have to literally transform into another character who is already established as cool to have any hopes of not being so repugnant'. So the main character is an obvious one, the last thing that could make a good fic is a good reason as to why and how they end up in Equestria as a fictional character (instead of that bullshit about the merchant at the fucking convention, that displaced authors need to pack that shit in).
So good writing, good character, and a good explanation, perhaps this is the recipe for a good displaced story... or perhaps it's a lost cause and no amount of changes can make it good. So now to throw my hastily stitched together hat into the ring (before swiftly pulling it right back out again because I have no intentions of actually writing this)...
Jim Carrey (the actual real life actor, Jim Carrey, not some dipshit pretending to be him) goes to Equestria after attending a film festival, where he obtained the titular Mask. Once in Equestria he takes on his movie persona any time he wears the mask, which I figured made sense (in the loosest sense of the word) since the whole point of that character was he was just an ordinary person who transformed into a completely different persona when he wore the mask, complete with an array of powers which displaced authors love bestowing upon themselves. Of course this just sounds like the exact same explanation all other displaced stories use that I was ripping on mere sentences ago, except the obvious twist is there is no Equestria, he doesn't really turn into a different character and get powers when he wears the mask. The entire thing is in his head, delusions brought on by his emotional and mental troubles (obviously heightened for the sake of this story), and his experiences in Equestria with the ponies, switching back and forth between his real self and his movie persona, is him struggling to overcome his depression and come to terms with his own identity.
I'm not so vain to assume that just because I come up with an idea, it's automatically good enough to meet my own unreasonably high expectations that I outlined earlier, this was just the idea that formulated in my own head after I asked myself what would make a good displaced story. I thought it seemed neat, and to myself at least, it addressed my concerns about main characters and explanations. Like I said though, I would never actually write it, I would first have to unfasten my hands from around my own throat before I could begin, and if I was going to write another story for here it would be the sequel to Mortal Coil. So in conclusion, that was all pretty pointless, dispalced fics still suck and I have assignments that I should really stop digressing from.
