Disaster Averted · 9:53pm Dec 29th, 2015
Have you ever been reading a story, eagerly awaiting the next update, only for the author to pop up in a blog saying their computer farted, and now all is lost?
Well, thanks to the diligent attentiveness of yours truly, that didn't happen (You may now applaud/cheer if you feel so inclined).
Relevant technobabble after the break...
So there I was, just minding my own business, when all of a sudden, the drive with all my files on it disappeared. I was not deterred. I valiantly restarted my computer and noticed on one of the boot screens that there had been an event recorded by the RAID controller indicating that one of the two hard drives in the array was going bad. The drive was back when I logged in, but I knew time was short. I frantically scrambled to back up the files to an external drive and acquire a replacement for the ailing disk. With surgical precision, I removed the offending hardware and replaced it. After the successful operation, I rebuilt the array and restored the endangered files to their rightful place, and nothing was lost.
Thanks to this, I have not lost all my progress on the penultimate chapter of Anthro Clopfic (along with all the other chapter manuscripts), nor have I lost any of my other incredibly vital documents, pictures, and other assorted digital detritus that just sort of accumulates over time. Thus, I am not writing this blog to bemoan the terrible misfortune of something gone wrong. Instead, I am writing this blog to pat myself on the back for a job well done in maintaining something that too many people take for granted: things not going horribly wrong.
As a side note, if you know someone who spends a lot of time making sure things don't go wrong, show them some appreciation. It's often a thankless task. Conversely, if you know someone who's had something go horribly wrong in their life, help them out as best as you can. You never know when you might need a helping hand.
Happy Holidays
