Lately I've been really loving this film.

The style of animation is a little weird, but once you get used to it, you see it's got its own special beauty to it. The music is great; a blend of songs written for the film with modern pop songs, rearranged in a more classical Latin American style.

Plus it has some great ships. There's Manolo x Maria and Joaquin x Maria — who will she choose?! (Yes, I know who she chooses… I've seen the film at least a dozen times… but don't spoil the answer because other people might not have seen it.) Or maybe they should just ditch Maria, in favour of some Manolo x Joaquin yaoi action. All that time she was away in Spain, I can't imagine they didn't think about it.

Here are the three of them. Joaquin is the one with the blue top. You can work out who the other two are yourself.

The other big ship in the film is La Muerte x Xibalba. (Let's ignore the fact that in Mayan mythology Xibalba is a place, not a person.)

Now who does that remind me of…?

I wonder if anybody else has noticed that similarity, and made art of it? Of course they have!

Also, I ship Adelita x Joaquin x Scardelita:

Okay, so Joaquin is alive, and Adelita and Scardelita are dead, but isn't the whole point of the film that death is no barrier to love? Therefore: OT3.

Anyway, if you've not seen this film, watch it! The director has apparently suggested two sequels are planned. The first film focussed mostly on Manolo; the second and third will supposedly focus on Joaquin and Maria respectively.
