Changes to Google Drive (Docs) Page · 4:07am Oct 15th, 2015
Hello once more Fimfiction! It's been a long while since I've checked in with you guys, and on that note, a long while since I've made a blog post that was actually useful! With that being said, I'm writing this little post to inform you all of some changes as far as the Google Drive, A.K.A. "Docs" pages go. I understand that some users as well as others around the web prefer the interface of Google Drive to the Fimfiction interface as far as reading goes, but due to several incidents involving unauthorized sharing as well as plagiarism (theft of work, infringement, other authors claiming to be myself, etc.) I've found myself left with no choice other than to tweak some of the access and sharing settings. With that in mind, some of you who prefer to use that service over Fimfiction may find yourself unable to view any old or new stories via the way you're used to. More to come later. Also, TL;DR. Here's a rundown.
What's going on again?
- Changes have been made to how you can access and share my stories on Google Drive.
Why are you doing that?
- Unauthorized sharing
- Recipient complaints
- Plagiarism
What all is changing?
- Access is no longer available through a simple search or link sharing
- Copy, link share, and print have all been turned off
Now, back to the TL;DR part! As I said, a simple search or any of the other regular ways of access won't take you to a story anymore as none of the stories are "public on the web" in status. Instead, you will have to go to the document titled "Fic and Character Listing" (link below) and click the link to the story you want. Copying and link sharing remain on for this document for now, but will be removed in the event none of the above incidents are resolved or, in the very least, drastically reduced. It sucks to do this, really, but the only other method I know would be to take them down completely. My biggest issue with this is that minors can easily gain access to these stories, even unintentionally, and as there are no age prompts the liability falls back on me. I know that a minor with the right know-how can easily access this kind of stuff on any site, but because of the precautions sites like Fimfiction have in place, we as authors are unhindered by liability. Adding an age disclaimer somewhere in each document may at least ease my concerns there, but then I'm still left with the problem that link sharing has yielded.
Of course, I'm always open to what you guys have to say so I encourage your feedback and suggestions! I'm happy to say that I've been writing in bulk as of late, so look forward to some juicy new stories coming your way soon! Thank you all for your support!
Fic and Character Listing Link
NEW! As of 1/23/2016, Google Drive access is no longer allowed. All stories that were on drive can be found here, and those that could NOT be found on Fimfiction.net will be transferred over. Thank you for your patience and understanding!
I find reading on FiMfic is much preferrable, because I can set the color scheme to one that is less stressful to my eyes. The black letters on a white background is just too bright for comfort. I prefer the dark grey setting

Agreed. I like Fimfiction for reading, but no so much as for writing. I just feel like the interface of Google Docs is more user-friendly and easier to work with. The dark grey setting and the default setting are the ones I like to flip flop between.
3474643 It is perfect for colabs or for when you have multiple editors. (as long as you have a crew you trust lol)

True lol, very true! Of course, you can find yourself backed into a very unpleasant corner when you accidentally flip on the setting which allows ANYONE to edit it. Luckily I had a backup saved on my hard drive though.
3474659 Thank The Goddess Luna that I have yet to do that lol
That sucks that people have been plagerising your stories! Honestly the low people stoop to these days to get attention.
Your best bet is always saving a copy on your computer that you can always refer back to incase of any complications. You never know these days what types of errors can randomly pop up, or if google decides to make major changes to google docs.
I gotta say I like reading on FimFic when I'm reading a story and the commenting system is better on fimfic.
So how have you been? Been a long time since we talked.

Yes, it unfortunately happens more often than it should. I'm all for someone taking the ideas I wrote down and expanding on them, or even taking the work and distributing it to other websites, but only after asking for permission and giving credit where credit is due of course.
I do precisely that. I write most of my stories and save them in the cloud so I can edit them anywhere, but then I also take finished hard copies and store them on my computer or a flash drive containing a time stamp and watermark as proof that the work is indeed mine. In regards to technical complications, I also try to keep copies on my desktop computer that I can just pick up on and copy and paste over in the event that I can't access the cloud or there is some kind of data loss issue.
The commenting system is by FAR way better here on Fimfiction. IDK what was being smoked within the Google HQ at the time the commenting system was developed, but it must be something really, really good. It's just not neat and is distracting IMO.
Anyway, I've been doing great, all things considered. Been super busy and haven't gotten to do much writing up until I did a little this week, but meh, I can't complain at all :). How are you and how have you been? It's been a very long time indeed!

Good to hear! Very happy for you! While that week is long gone by now, I'm sure, I hope you enjoyed it.
Sorry for the late reply, and the same wishes to you. I hope you had a merry christmas and a happy new year!
