Of flying and Unicorns. · 6:31pm Sep 22nd, 2015
I love flying dreams. I can't get enough of them. That sense of lift and weightlessness, being able to feely soar and go where ever my imagination and whims would take me. Looking down at the world, seeing the fields, hills and everything else stretched out below is exhilarating. Not only that, but seeing the clouds tower over, above and around me. Bright blue skies of the day, or the onyx and silver of a moonlit night.
There's nothing quite like a flying dream.
Indeed, living with a sea view, I often day dream of just taking flight and heading for the horizon, spend time spiralling and wheeling freely through the sky and dipping to skim the waves.
I've even enjoyed lucid dreams where I had near total control of my flight and wasn't entirely at the mercy of my sub-conscious.
But of course, these are just dreams, and I can't actually fly.
Which is very disappointing all told...
But this in turn, raised an interesting question.
If I want to fly so much, why is my ponysona a Unicorn and not a Pegasus?
well my first, and most obvious thought was the simple practicalities of using magic to manipulate objects and the world around him, which as a mechanic for the day to day how to, made his life much easier to imagine.
But still flying tugged at my heart strings.
I was tempted for a while to make him an Alicorn, get the best of both worlds. But they are meant to be rare and remarkable, something that makes you look up in wonder and go, 'wow, there's something you don't see everyday'. But if you simply conjour one up because it's easy, before you know it, there's a spare Alicorn for everyday of the week, and suddenly as characters they've lost some of their magic and appeal. At least that's my thought on the matter.
So, why not make him a Pegasus, get him out there flying and enjoying himself in the skies.
In the end it was because I dream of flying, but I don't really know what it's like, I only know what it's like to want to fly. And if a Ponysona is supposed to be a reflection of ourselves, then I figured that, like me, as much as he would want to fly, he is earth bound, and can only dream of it while being filled with envy for all the creatures who can simply spread their wings.
