Sonata and Pinkie, Take Two · 10:05am Sep 17th, 2015
I'll try to tackle once again Sonata and Pinkie, and why they act like that. Note that this is just my theory; one is free to disagree with it, as the movie and books have not really dissected any of them thoroughly (and being movies, shows, and books aimed primarily at to something like 15 or maybe a little older or so, I'm not totally sure they'll go deeply into the each character's motives, personalities and the like). In any case, first of all I don't believe every pony is dumb--except when one is really mentally challenged since birth. Otherwise, most people I have met are fairly normal, and so far I have not met anyone who is totally dumb. Nor act 24/7 as clowns. Even that class clown or that comic at work is most of the time normal, just like any other person. They only act comically at certain periods, and we remember their antics or jokes, but they don't certainly act like Pinkie or Sonata 24/7. So my theory is that, unlike most other characters in the show and movies, they are caricatures of certain people, or perhaps caricatures in general. Now most will say, 'Yeah we already know that.'
But what if they act that way because of some troubled past? I don't think that FiM or maybe EqG will go too deeply into a character; well, maybe EqG, should it become a series. But that again is a big if. When thinking about Sonata and Pinkie, I remember someone from "Rurouni Kenshin", Soujiro Seta. They are almost the same, though Soujiro of course is no jokester nor does he pull out pranks on people, nor is he in any way dumb (in fact he is a pretty clever guy, for those not familiar with the manga/anime). But Soujiro often smiles, and even at times Shishio is disturbed by Soujiro's seeming lack of feeling other than being "happy". But Soujiro is hiding a troubled past, having been the victim of abuse by his own family. He hid his emotions, and his physical and mental pain, by appearing numb and happy. So, what if--just what if--Sonata and Pinkie are also so cheerful as to appear so comical and even to most, dumb and clueless, but are really hiding something? Are they really like that, or are they simply masking something else; perhaps a past they'd rather forget, and just bury it underneath all that happy and cheerful countenance? Again, it's just my take on these two characters, who have become fan favorites, especially surprisingly Sonata.
And in a way, it is also connected to my fanfic, or at least to a planned fanfic if ever, in looking more closely on the two of them. My head canon, so to speak.
I'll just add a small note, since I did forget to mention--I am talking about the human Pinkie here, not the pony one. Pony Pinkie can be crazy as she likes, and that is understandable. However when we talk in human terms, Pinkie's personality becomes harder to explain, and even justify, without taking into consideration other factors on why she's like so. Ditto as well for Sonata on this.
