Logical Fallacies in Fans · 8:22am Jul 13th, 2015
So it's the middle of the night, and again I find myself being unable to sleep. The reason now, is very specific; I'm waiting for a story to be approved. That being said, I do have some interesting thoughts that could only come to a sleepy version of myself. I have pinpointed a logical fallacy in an argument that I've heard from several people. (Those who wronged me know who they are, as for the others, I'm not mad at you, just wanted to point something out is all.)
The fallacy is this, that anything written by the writers of season one, is absolute cannon, but anything written by new writers is not. Now I'm not one to say that by adding a whole new team of writers that mlp did itself any favors, well except with season five, cus that's the bomb so far. Now here is the problem, as with most projects lasting this long, new writers will come in, and old ones will leave. Politics aside, this is true for most things of this nature, and understandably the actual cannon of the show can sometimes suffer for it.
Here is the issue that I don't like. By saying that everything made by the original writers is cannon, you basically make The Faust's infamous tweet about ponies bathroom habits true. Despite Hasbro trying to repair that bit of damage by adding in restrooms. Although I think the idea of ponies dropping there waste wherever they please outside, I can't take that seriously, and thankfully I don't have too.
Here is one more issue, let's say that one of the writers, either under their real name, or under an alias wrote a fanfiction? Is that cannon? What if they wrote a blog where they made up some terrible facts about the show, do you consider it cannon? There really isn't anything stopping these people from doing so, even a piece of paper couldn't stop them if they used an alias or labeled it under some kind of alternate theory.
So this ends up bringing up what is cannon. Truth be told, cannon is whatever the heck Hasbro says it is. So far Hasbro has confirmed that the tv show is what they call Cannon A, and the comic books are considered Cannon B. Now various writers of the show have claimed that their other projects are cannon, even if they had previously stated otherwise, thus making a giant freaking mess out of the whole ordeal.
But in the end, the underlining truth of the mater, of why we write fanfiction is simple. We don't write fanfiction because we wanted something cannon, we wrote it because we wanted the exact opposite. So should we listen to cannon? Well with how convaluded it is, I say only listen to what parts fit your story best.
Is Fluttershy scared of going on stage? Sure, in season four she is. Is Fluttershy scared of going on stage? Not in season two! See what I did there? Contradictions in the tv show itself. Seriously, with how many writers there are, we shouldn't get upset and insult people over what's cannon or not. With a series like MLP it's silly to get angry over this. You want a show that doesn't break cannon, check out Adventure Time, or Gravity Falls. You want cute little ponies that could care less about being consistent but are here for the adventure instead? Watch MLP.
That's my midnight blog, rant, whatever. Hope you liked it.
Nigga does it look like ah care? But seriously just ignore them some people are just stupid.
