Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Nintendo 3DS (Review) · 2:10pm Jan 1st, 2015
SUPER SMASH BROS!
Man, that brings back memories. Super Smash Bros. What to say... what to say? Well, I guess one word can describe that game: AWESOME!
When I played the game on my N64, I was so amazed by it. Playing as my favourite Nintendo characters, beating the snot out of one and another, having fun with my brother, sister and friends. I love Smash Bros. and it was a glorious time for me... too bad I wasn't good at it. I was such an inexperienced fighter as a kid and I kept getting my flank whooped by Master Hand in Hard mode, all to just unlock Ness. My favorite to use was obviously Mario, but I also use Link, Donkey Kong, Kirby and Captain Falcon. Smash Bros gave me memories I will cherish for a long time but the next hard hitter for me would be the sequels.
Melee... well... let me be honest... I never owned a Gamecube as a kid. I missed out on a lot of good games. I know, I'm sad too. But, luckily I got a Wii so I played Melee on the Wii instead and it was mind-blowing! The graphics look even greater and the fighting was faster. I hated the event matches however... I really hate them. Not because I was still inexperience but because of the difficulty spike. Ganondorf is one of my new mains, along with Bowser, Peach, Falco and Samus. Overall, the game was fun. But then, Brawl arrived and while it wasn't as fast as Melee, I still had a great time playing Brawl. Toon Link was a great addition and so was Pit, but my new main as of this day is Sonic! Mario had a different moveset but he still fights the same. (Was FLUDD even necessary?) The new adventure mode "Subspace Emissary" was alright. I once beat the entire mode on intense difficulty, and with concentrated practice I can take on Tabuu no problem. Classic Mode was great, the trophies look wonderful and the other modes were fantastic.
Now, for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS? As Rarity would put it; "SMASHING!" The game never looked so good in HD. The characters, the visuals and graphics, and not to mention 60fps. It runs so smoothly. The game as a whole is excellent but these two games are different to one another. I'll start off by giving out my first complaint I have with the Wii U version. Smash Tour freaking suuuuucks! Who asked for this? I'm sorry, to those who like it, but it's not fun for me. I played this mode with my siblings and a CPU and it was boring and the style really doesn't work. If you ask me, I prefer Smash Run on 3DS over Smash Tour any day. That aside, the game modes are challenging and motivated. I like how you can arrange your intensity level in Classic. I got my butt kicked at 8.0 so I still need to train. I didn't train my amiibos yet so I'll settle for that another time. The characters movesets play well and the game is overall a great experience to duke it out with friends and family. I especially like the new 8-player smash mode, and the maps are huge. The trophies are hard to get this time around, home run stadium is back and a brand new target blast game. It's a good time to get custom parts to customize your Mii fighter and give new skills to your main fighters. Trophy Rush is a fun game to nab some trophies and special smash offers a variety of things you can do. Personally I like stamina battles because it feels more like a Street Fighter game to knock down your opponents health rather sending them flying off screen. My current mains right now are: Mario, Link, Kirby, DK, Bowser, Pit, Falco, Captain Falcon, Zero Suit Samus, Sonic, Mega Man, Peach and... so much to name. But I usually use Sonic, Link, Bowser and Lucario. Hoping to use Greninja soon though.
Verdict
Super Smash Bros. 4 is an excellent addition. New characters, new stages, new Pokemon and the detail and effort put in this game is done great. Smash Tour is a bit of a bore but the experience lies within the single player and smash modes. Smash Bros. will always be a Nintendo classic and if I hadn't gotten a Wii U at this time, I would have missed out on a lot of fun. I hear Mewtwo is coming back as DLC so that's something to look forward to. This game made me realize that if I was never a Nintendo fan and I would never like Smash Bros. I'm glad that never happened. I love Smash Bros and for all of the memories it has given me.
The people at Nintendo and Masahiro Sakurai, I salute you!
