Winter + Kindle + Afternoon/Evening Work Schedule · 4:32pm Dec 4th, 2014
I try not to spam my few followers with meaningless blog posts about my personal life but maaan I gotta brag about this.
So like, for most pplz, it's gettin' cold now, right? And no one wants to get out of their warm beds in the morning, right? But I work afternoons and evenings, so when I wake up in the morning, I still got hours to burn. And burn them I do, blissfully broiling in my blankets. If that ain't enough fiery metaphors for you, I got a Kindle too, so I can happily consume my fanfics without leaving my heated haven. Sometimes I wake up, read, fall asleep again, wake up again, and read MOAR before finally getting up.
And man, lemme tell ya. It's effin' GLORIOUS.
You may now proceed to shower me with loathing and flame. I will bask in it.
On an unrelated note, anyone know a good romance fic I can sink my teeth into? Couple days ago, I read through all of Duet in the Folk Style in one sitting (it was awesome), and it left me with an itch for cheesy gushy happy romance with enough waffage to fluff a polar bear. Plus, I've always been a sucker for romance, ever since my Inuyasha fanfiction days. I'd prefer male/female pairing, as neither F/F nor M/M hit the same primal chord with me, though I have no problems with them. In the meantime, I'm going through Flight of the Alicorn. 25% done. It's... adequate, so far. Prose is competent enough, but lacks the artistic flair of great writers. Backdrop story is cool. Politics are funsauce.
I'm still working on a reading and a radio play. Uh, slowly. It'll get done eventually. It would help if my blankets weren't so darn toasty.
http://www.fimfiction.net/stories?search=romance&order=top&unread=1&bookshelf=91941 Here's the list of stories I've Favorited with romance in them. I particularly recommend the top one, The Best Night Ever, which is very much a "Fandom Classic".
You should definitely read It's Always Sunny in Fillydelphia. Applejack/Soarin and one of my all-time faves. :D
2633832 Oooh thanks! Putting it on my kindle now :)
2633489 The Best Night Ever is certainly a fantastic tale, but alas, one I can never again have the pleasure of reading for the first time.

Dunno why I didn't comment on this before, but I'm commenting on it now!
I read It's Always Sunny in Fillidelphia. OMG I loved it. Flawless writing on a micro level that hit the perfect tone for a comedy. There were tons of amazing jokes and references, and almost all of them were winners. The one time I facehoofed was when Applejack accidentally launched herself into the air shortly after meeting Soarin. Making a wacky and embarrassing first impression in a romantic comedy? Yeah, never seen that before... but other that that, I was laughing nonstop.
Really love what was done with Soarin's character. It seems to me that making a character goofy can be a little tricky where romances are concerned because too many crazy antics can turn a character into a caricature, and no one can get emotionally invested in shipped caricatures. I felt this fic did a great job of avoiding that pitfall, weaving Soarin's goofiness into a fully-realized character. Or maybe I'm just spouting nonsense to make myself look smart.
And then the ending tied everything together in one nice little package, which is difficult to do, considering the zany places they visited. Many other comedies feature random side-tracked scenes that are only there evoke a laugh or two, while doing little to progress the plot. The fact that not a single scene was wasted in this fic added to the okay I need to stop, I'm just trying to make myself look smart. Point is it was awesome.
Sequel was pretty good too. Flawless writing, like the first. I couldn't really get into it to the same degree as the first because I was so hell-bent on seeing the ship progress. My immediate inclination when reading through it was to glance over all the action and focus on the hot stuff. In that respect, writing an entirely different sort of story as a sequel was probably not an optimal choice. It can't be called a "wrong" choice, but at least for me, it was the main reason behind its failure to evoke a strong emotional reaction in me.
The AJ/Soarin nuzzles were good though. I squee'd each time.
Hated the Doctor Who stuff at the end. Doctor Who is always a zany character to throw into a fic - not only because of his personality, but because of his very existence as a pony. It's impossible to take him seriously when his name is a pun! As such, I found his inclusion in such a dark adventure tale to be jarring and unwelcome.
But yeah that's so much for the recommendation! I enjoyed Fillydelphia IMMENSELY. Sequel was certainly worth the read too.

Reading this comment made me realize that I started watching the new Who series just so I'd be able to write David Tennant as a pony, and it took me long enough to get through his episodes that I now no longer consider Doctor Whooves to be a worthwhile crossover to write. :B
