I've Had A Realization · 9:20pm Nov 20th, 2014
A while ago I wrote a story entitled Legend of the Burning Snow. It was a little villains tribute with my own two villains I made up to have an original plot. It was incredibly rushed, I took as little time as possible to get it published, and it lacked so much detail that it could have used to make it a good story and my own little contribution to the Friendship is Magic universe.
But I'm not here to advertise. I'm here because I've been thinking lately on what I'm doing with my story telling. What is it that we fan-fiction writers create? The obvious response would be "stories." While that is correct, I don't think enough people out there realize what can truly come from what we type up on our little computer screens. These are words. Just words. Words we use to share with each other the vast array of ideas and interests that we have thought up and want to see come to life. After all, isn't that all that words are good for? Telling stories?
For those of you who believe that, I want to ask you one question: Why are you here? Now I'm not asking why you were born, or are on the internet, I mean HERE, on FimFiction. What brought you to this website where bronies of any age, any gender, any interests, can come together and share these words with one another? I think we all know what played a big part in inviting you here. And that show uses words in the same way that we can. The difference is that the writers for Friendship is Magic are more experienced than us. They go out and get paid for the stories they create to share them with the world, right there on your television screen.
But the reason it's like that, or at least one of the reasons, is that the show has something, deeper, in itself that we as writers neglect in the majority of our work. The show and it's writers know that words can be powerful. Inspiring. Eye-opening. They do not forget that their work can and does have sentiment buried within it, and it reflects off the audience and inspires them to make their own stories.
As of late, I've been revising Legend of the Burning Snow, and as I've went along with it, I find myself thinking about all the improvements it's gained. The effort that I put into this story, the details, the character reactions, the morality, it all comes together to create something better than ever before. And I did it all with words. Now I'm not the only one to use the ability to use my words to get a reaction out of my audience. Remember My Little Dashie? What about Cupcakes? Both of these stories were able to stimulate their readers' emotions, and to this day are two of the most famous works of art in the fandom. And they both originated from Friendship is Magic and the inspiration that it instilled upon it's writers.
I want to remind everyone reading this that every episode and every movie is based off of a script. And every script is made up of words. A large number of small, insignificant words. But still, look at what they have done for us. They created a fan-base around them that admires them, that tunes in every week to see what these words come together to create. And these people have had heavy reactions to the show and it's life changing power. Ladies and gentlemen, I want to show you a little video posted by the Fiery Joker. Some may know him as joshscorcher, others by Commander Firebrand, but he still came out with a video counting down his top ten personal episodes of MLP. It's the most I can find without making you watch all the way through the Brony Chronicles part 2, but I want to give you an idea of what these words can do.
Each episode that he stated to have connections to were all based on a few words written up by a few people. And those words will live on in his heart and continue to remind him what Friendship is Magic did for him. What I want people to take away from this blog post is that each of us comes here to share our words with the world. But these don't have to be hollow, meaningless words meant to give our readers a short moment of entertainment. These stories we create are allowed to be inspiring. They are allowed to be thoughtful. They are allowed to be personal, and meant to touch the hearts of our audience. Stories aren't always going to be great, and they aren't always going to be meaningful, hey some won't even be able to be put on paper, because we can't find the inspiration to get them there. But we, as writers, have the ability to share these stories, these words, with each other, and we can use these words to create our own powerful works of art for all to enjoy.
In closing, I want to say that each one of you has the potential to write incredible, touching stories. You just have to find it within you to tell it. You can take what I say here today to heart, or you can simply pass it by. In fact, I get the feeling that this post will be nothing but a memory, meant to be forgotten in a few days. Maybe less. I'll let you decide what this means to you, because after all,
They're just words.
