Tom, a Different Tom, and Some Thoughts · 6:09am Nov 4th, 2014
Some days, I can't get even 200 words written. Some days, The right inspiration strikes and I write an entire story in one day. Today was one of the latter. The story in question was a rather short one, but still.
For those of you who haven't heard, Tom Magliozzi, of Car Talk fame, passed away earlier today. I know there have been several famous comedians/actors/whatever who have died in the recent months, and Tom is probably the least famous of them. But this is the one that saddened me the most. Because while I've seen a few of Robin Williams' movies, for example, I've listened to Car Talk every week for years. And every single one of those weeks, Tom has made me smile. (And I'd even occasionally learn something about cars.) And as another extra bonus, my other favorite radio program, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, wouldn't even exist if it weren't for Tom, Ray, and Car Talk.
So when I heard that Tom died, I knew that I had to do something. And I very quickly realized a few things:
1) There's an MLP character named Tom too.
2) I'm supposed to be writing ponyfics.
3) In fact, I'm supposed to be writing a Twilight/Tom crossover shipfic.
4) I could make this work.
And so I sat down in front of my computer, and a few hours later, "In Memory of a Great Rock" was published. Personally, I think that it has a mixture of a bit of the sadness that I feel because of Tom's death and a bit of the humor that I think Tom exemplified so well. I think he's the type of guy who would rather have us smiling and laughing than moping and crying, even now.
Tom, we'll miss you, but we won't forget you.
Everyone else, enjoy the story.
