My Thoughts on Like/Dislike · 2:05pm Sep 19th, 2014
As I am browsing through stories on this site, I obviously see the Likes/Dislikes on it as well. I would just like to take a moment to express my opinion on the option of Liking and Disliking. I honestly don't like it at all, at least the Dislike option. I feel like so many people will just skip over a story if it has a bad Like/Dislike ratio, when they should really give it a chance and read it first before blowing it off. I believe all stories deserve a chance and you can't judge it by it's cover, title, or its ratio. I also fear that a bad ratio also discourages authors from writing. If they see such a negative response, they could become disheartened and give up writing altogether. Authors should always strive to improve and do better, and I honestly believe that anyone can become a great author if they work hard enough. All they may need is some encouragement and help, which certainly isn't provided by a Dislike. I am taking a pledge today, a pledge that I will NEVER Dislike a story. If I should find a story that is lacking I, and hopefully others, will instead tell the author where they need to improve in a polite and kind manner. I myself have shortcomings as an author, and I have sought the aid of those more experienced than I in order to attempt to improve myself. I believe that I have become a better author because of it and I encourage others to do the same. Since I started writing, I have come to hold a firm belief that so long as at least one person got some enjoyment out of your story, then it was a story that was worth writing. To all those writers who are struggling and not getting many likes or views, I beg you not to give up and to keep striving to improve.
