I've Got a Question or Two... Maybe Three · 3:55pm Sep 3rd, 2014
What's a reasonable chapter length?
I know it's best to stay above 1k but how above, 2k, 3k, 4k? I'm more concerned about this because my latest project Dead On Arrival focuses on 3 different characters and I wanted to format it in threes, one chapter for each character from that characters point of view and the occasional interjection of a third person perspective for major events happening behind the scenes. Right now I'm sitting at 1,200+ in the first chapter and nothing in the other two on paper as of yet.
What would you like to see?
Sure I've already planned out a major portion of the story arcs but I'm open to suggestions for filler episodes. One such filler chapter I have planned is teaching Shining Armor how to use a gun.
And anyone here edit?
Before you say go to one of those groups, I have trust issues big ones. I have a backup but I don't want to just say it and don't ask anybody else. Anybody know who I can trust, I'd like to stay in my circle of friends as much as possible.
I'd really appreciate any advice.
All for now,
Debonair
2424656 That helps a little, thanks.
Well if it is a multi chapter story you might as well go for three thousand words in the first chapter. At minimum 1,500 words. That amount would be reasonable from what I see in most stories, but then again 1,200 isn't a bad start at all.
I guess it would depend on what you're going for. First chapters always needs to have something to grab the readers attention, so I don't think it would matter much on the amount words in a first chapter really.
But that's just me saying a thought.
2424665 Well it's a murder mystery, so I'd say I have something to get their attention.
I enjoy reading up to the 1k-3k range, anything more than 3k is way to long and I wont read it (with an exception for stories with one singular chapter that is longer than 3k)
2428566 Well I think 3,000 sounds like a good number.
