Callout to any of my followers who may have a historic bend. What would you call a Napoleonic unit that specializes in fortifications and defensive tactics? For example, Dragoons and Hussarrs are cavalry units, as are Lancers, Fussiliers were specialized technical units, but what would the equivalent of an engineering corp have been called? I am not as proficient in Napoleonic formations as I would like, and I need to name an earth pony heavy regiment, ther nickname is 'Celestias Anvil' for soaking up heavy loses while mobility units like the Hassars and Lancers hammer them into submission. I am currently leaning towards Fussuliers, the predecessor to grenadiers who used primitive bombs to break enemy formations.
Any suggestions?
Hm, not sure I can answer this but maybe I can jog some ideas?
1. How about naming them after the formations of German troops in the Napoleonic Wars - the Freikorps? The Freikorps Engineers perhaps...
2. Some of the purely defensive forces in Germany and the Netherlands were made up of citizen volunteers; they usually had the suffixes 'wache' (watch) or 'garde' (guard) attached to their names. So, the defending units of Hamburg would be the Bürgerwache or Bürgergarde. How about something for Canterlot like 'the Canterwache' or 'the Cantergarde'?
Hope that helps,
Sparks
The 1st Cantergarde Regiment has a nice ring to it.
Off to Wikipedia to see if they know anything about Napoleonic engineers.
