Is Megalodon still alive? · 1:23am Aug 16th, 2014
There is a lot of controversy surrounding the claim that it is still alive. For those of you who do not know what Megalodon was allow me to enlighten you. Megalodon was a super sized shark on steroids. This 60 foot long Mega shark had no natural predators other than other Megalodons. Megalodon lived in the warmer climate of the Miocene era and was thought to have died out when the climate started to cool and begin to turn the planet into an ice ball an event we now call "The Ice Age". So why does the claim that Megalodon is still alive exist? Well it is based on the fact we have found other animals that were thought to have gone extinct millions of years ago. But let me tell you why this claim is just bull shit. First, it is very likely Megalodon was warm blooded. Since the climate in the Miocene era was very warm Megalodon would have thrived in the warm waters. Second, If the climate started to rapidly change like it did at the end of the Miocene then Megalodon was too large to adapt quickly. here is a chart to prove my point.
Great Whites and Whales would be able to adapt quickly due to their small size, and they would have moved to colder waters. Since Megalodon was so large and warm blooded it would stay in the warm waters and be cut off from its main food source... whales. Megalodons would have turned to cannibalism just to survive. Eventually their numbers would collapse and the last Megalodon would starve to death. Thus ending the reign of the oceans largest and most terrifying shark. So is Megalodon really still out there? It is a matter of opinion, but you would think that with a shark so large that it would have shown up and documented sometime in history... But really I think all the buzz is just people looking to tell a good story.
Edit: Due to new research I no longer think Megalodon died out because of climate change, I think it was out competed by other species and died out that way.
