That's not fog.
The air is musty and smells like matches and old campfires. The stink of it sticks to your clothes. It creeps through open windows like a thief. Fans simply speed this up. To make it worse, the day is particularly humid. It's fire season now, and these can last for days. So here I am, in my nice cool house, which now smells like it's been set fire to. It was either turn on the a/c, grin and bear it, or fry in my own sweat.
I hate this city.
I know the displeasure of stink. Used to live next a dairy farm, with cows. They would burn massive piles of manure for days upwind of us. In the middle of summer. When we had no AC and had to use open windows and fans. That stuff smelled great let me tell ya.

Not quite the same thing -- this one is due to nature as opposed to choice -- but likely much worse-smelling in your case.
I live in one of the highest point in the city; the air downtown is literally grey.
