The Conversion Confusion · 6:13pm Jun 1st, 2012
Well now, once more, my uncanny ability to find the perfect stories to lead into has yet to fail me. If you haven't already noticed, my intention with these blogs is to have each review's subject matter to flow into the next, be it a character or a plot thread of some description. This time around it happens to be a double whammie, in that I am now reviewing "The Conversion Bureau" by Blaze, and my own fic just so happens to be a Conversion Bureau fic., which I have made a decision about publishing. I know I promised to do Minalkra's stories this review, but i felt that the best way to contextualize them would be to dispense the source material first, and since the thing I'm linking this to the last story through is human/pony relationships, it still fits fine, and at time of writing I have no fans, so by the time I have enough so that their opinions actually matter, which is to say when I have more than zero people that read this blog, I will be a little bit more apologetic. However, as that is not the case and I'm actually doing this blog more for myself at the moment than anything else, the only reviews that shall fill these pages are ones that capture my attention and fit to my personally defined idea of what I think should go on next...
Anyway, returning to talk of my own fic, I have decided that, if I go a week without posting at any time, I will do a full-story dump up to and including all finished parts of my story for everyone to read. This includes if I go on hiatus or am sick, or simply stop giving a damn. This could also happen if I simply gain confidence in my writing and storytelling abilities, but don't hold your breath.
"The Conversion Bureau" is a very interesting concept, which has been used by people in one manner or another since MLP fanfiction first arose, the best known examples of which you know by now, those being MLD, and TCB. The concept of ponies coming into our world. However, and TCB style fic has a particular way about it, specifically the detail in which ponies come to our world and humans are "ponified". A simple concept that has caught the imagination of hundreds of writers and thousands of readers. Now, the material which I am reviewing now is the original TCB piece on which it was all based, and I myself am grabbing a few choice ideas from, as far as the major concepts.
The story line of the fic itself is easy to understand, and the character is very relatable, if somewhat plain at times. As you well know by this point, I like to have intrigue, and I love to have things explained to me that I feel need explaining. Their this case, the thing I felt could have been explained a little more was the effect of the conversion on the recipient's psyche, which was explained tantalizingly little.
The appeal of the story is obvious and simple, in that you can have your own say on what would happen were the ponies to really came to earth, which is, as all bronies know, a freaking awesome idea. Now, "The Conversion Bureau" is a rare idea, and a rare storyline in itself, on par with MLD in its originality, hence why it is right up there on the scale of fame with MLD and Cupcakes. However! TCB I unique in these stories in that it is a neutral story in which to provide a story in the spirit of because of its emotional neutrality. This means that any conversion bureau fic can take on any range of emotions and tones easily, while MLD and Cupcakes are mostly limited to negative emotional beginnings, as was displayed in APR. now this is not to say that they must end sadly, which is also proven in APR, but there is a certain emotional range with which you can begin that is not present in the other two.
I of course limit myself to these main three for efficiency's sake, though I'm sure there are others with side story capabilities, these are the most common, and if you wish to share your own in the comments, you are free to do so. Also, though I'm sure you guys would have taken this liberty even if I hadn't offered it, you are free to suggest a fic of your choice for me to do a review on, which will result in a mailbag review, one of which is coming up after my next review.
Well. That was definitely a good read, and I think you guys should give it an honest try, and hell, while you're at it, check out its sister stories, there are literally hundreds published, and I wouldn't be surprised if you could find a few you like for yourself. Naturally, I'm going to review a few of these ( two, to be exact), both by the same author, a personal favorite of mine, Minalkra. The stories are "The Conversion Bureau: Why?" and "The Conversion Bureau: What Would Really Happen", each a great story in their own right, the second of which inspired my own story, now in its third part! Anyway, I hope to hear from you guys, and always remember, it's never too late to comment, be it a year or more after my post, I'll always respond to interested parties.
One thing I'd like to bring to everybody's attention. I couldn't, for the life of me, find the rest of the story. The portion I found I this portion I'll link you to, and if someone finds the complete work, I'll retrospectively review that, however, until then, however, this is all I have, and as far as my knowledge extends, it never WILL be finished, anyway, I hope to see some views coming in soon. I shall persevere! See you next time!

P.S. try to ignore when I ramble, or just enjoy it, because there's a lot more of it to come, I assure you, and all you'll be doing by asking me to stop is asking the tiger to change his stripes, all you'll get is ignored or bitten for your trouble. And yes, this post script is meant to enforce exactly that point.
